Gauges not working, transmission too slow, battery discharged

With engine running, put a volt meter accross battery terminals. If it reads LESS than 13 volts, your alternator is bad.

I'm having a problem with my 2005 Artic cat 400

things that could be wrong.
compression leak (Piston rings or valves )
fuel (fuel air mix)
ignition (spark plug lead or dispack)
battery or alternator power
spark would be my first though as this needs to be working properly for full range. weak spark will run but will over tax the engine at speeds. if the engine is running fine until a certain speed then this would be affected in affected flood the spark. can als be the alternator if the battery is not charging correctly.

Lights went out and radiator fan stays running after car is shut off

It sounds like an alternator, yet you say the fan still worked after you disconnected the battery? And the car was still running? Or the car died out. Sorry, need some more details on this one.

Alternator will not charge battery

no year, no joy, sorry !!!!
so here is a generic answer....
1: alternator not reaching full speed. RPM. i use and optical tacho
or just set belt tension to spec.
2: fuses blown to alt, see engine bay fuse box.
3: wires fell off the alternator.
4: dash charge lamp burned out.
5: bad alternator.
6: some years the ECU regulates the Alternator.

2004 sable SEL. The idiot lights all stay on after the engine starts. Only does this once usually. If you turn the engine off and restart it then the lights work again. Happens more on cold/damp...

Ey sounds like you have a bad alternator so you should test to see if the alternator is still good or bad by let the engine running then pop the hood opened and disconnected the ground cable off from the battery terminal so when you do that and if the engine dies then you have bad alternator but if the engine still running after disconnect then your alternator is still good

Battery at 10.5 volts, how to tell difference between battery problem & alternator problem

disconnect positive battery cable with engine running, if the engine stays running it's the battery. if the engine dies it's the alternator.
or you can remove the alternator and take it to autozone or advance and have them test it for you. it's free

Alternator rebuilt tested ok still will not charge battery

hi im sorry to tell you this never ever disconnect the battery while the car is running , could cause surge which will blow the alternator at best at worst it could fry the ECU (computer) WHY would you want to disconnect battery while the engine is running or is there something im missing here?

Suburban charging problem

pulling the battery post is not a good test.. It can cause a voltage spike which will kill the alternator if it is not already bad. and it causes a spark at the battery which can cause battery to explode!!!! It is not likely a battery will explode but since you have just charged them they will be "gassy",and I have firsthand seen someone have a battery explode in there face it is not pretty!!!!

if your belt is still on it is most likely the alternator

Seems to be electrical problem

What initiated the need for jump starting? Is the alternator charging? Has the battery been checked?

To check the alternator, once the engine has been jumped and is running, remove one of the battery post connections. If the engine dies, the alternator is not charging the battery, and the symptoms you describe are the on-board computer going through low voltage spasms until sufficient electrical power to operate the engine / tranny is drained and the car dies.

If the car continues to run with no battery attached, the alternator is charging - - - and I would recommend removing the battery and having it checked and (if good) recharged to full capacity. I would also recommend having it charged even if the alternator is the problem just to delay the onset of the low voltage problems. The car should operate normally for a few miles before the battery drains too low after a full recharge, enabling you to get it to a shop for alternator service / replacement.

If you attempt replacing the alternator yourself, make sure the battery is disconnected prior to starting the job. Saves blowing up good stuff by accidental short.

Hope this helps and good luck!
