Do I have to completely drop the starter on my 1991 K2500 to replace the positive battery cable ?

YEP BE A WHOLE EASIER.AND YOU SEE WHAT YOU DOING.EVERY TIME I CHANGED POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE I DROP THE STARTER SO YOU WILL HAVE WIRE IN THE RIGHT POSITION.

Where is the starter soenoid located on a 1991 Lexus LS400?


If the solenoid is clicking when you turn the key its very unlikely to be a relay fault, the relay controls the feed to the exciter wire which must be working for the solenoid to be clicking. If you haven't ruled out the battery completely do so by attaching jump leads, if that makes no difference you ideally need to check for a volt drop between engine and battery earth terminal and also main starter feed to battery positive, (the latter can be a problem with difficult to access starter motors tho.) if all wiring is ok its most likely the motor itself, if you can get to it give it a tap with something and see if it makes any difference. If it starts after a tap then its most likely the starter motor.

Complete loss of electrical power


test battery if voltage is 13 volts or better check positive and negative cable for clean good conections check in line fusible link by starter on positive cable if all good remove starter with solenoid take to parts store and have it checked solenoid may be bad. if all is good check main fuse usually under hood . If battery voltage is not 13 volts or better have alternater tested have battery load tested after chargeing.

2005 Sedona wont start, wont take a jump. Radio works and lights come on but wont turn over. Friend said to follow the positive battery cable to its end and id find the starter. cant find it. looked here...


OK, even if you find the starter, you'll have to find a way of testing it.

Starter Testing Starting System Voltage Drop Tests NOTE: The battery must be in good condition and fully charged prior to performing this test.
There are three area of the starter motor circuits that voltage drop test can be performed on. These include:
  • The starter feed circuit
  • The starter ground circuit
  • The starter solenoid.
Starter Feed Circuit
  1. Disable the fuel system by removing the fuel pump fuse or the fuel pump relay.
  2. Verify that the vehicle will not start.
  3. Connect the positive lead of a voltmeter to the positive terminal of the battery.
  4. Connect the negative lead of a voltmeter to the starter B+ terminal.
  5. Turn the ignition key to the START position and note the voltage displayed on the voltmeter.
    • Ideally, there should be no more than 0.1 volt drop for each connection displayed on the voltmeter. No voltage should be consumed by the vehicle wiring
      1. If the battery cable connects directly to the starter motor there should be no more than a 0.2 volt drop measured
      2. If the vehicle uses a starter solenoid between the battery and the starter motor terminal there should be no more than 0.4 volt displayed on the voltmeter
Starter Ground Circuit
  1. Disable the fuel system by removing the fuel pump fuse or the fuel pump relay.
  2. Verify that the vehicle will not start.
  3. Connect the positive lead of the voltmeter to the case of the starter motor.
  4. Connect the negative lead of the voltmeter to the negative terminal of the battery.
  5. Turn the ignition key to the START position and note the voltage displayed on the voltmeter.
    • Ideally, there should be no more than 0.1 volt drop for each connection displayed on the voltmeter. No voltage should be consumed by the vehicle wiring
      1. If the battery cable connects directly to the starter motor there should be no more than a 0.2 volt drop measured
    • Starter Solenoid
  6. Disable the fuel system by removing the fuel pump fuse or the fuel pump relay.
  7. Verify that the vehicle will not start.
  8. Connect the positive lead of the voltmeter to the case starter B+ terminal.
  9. Connect the negative lead of the voltmeter to the lug (the starter M terminal) that connects the starter solenoid to the starter motor.
  10. Turn the ignition key to the START position and note the voltage displayed on the voltmeter.
    • Ideally, there should be no more than 0.2 volt drop across the starter solenoid displayed on the voltmeter.
In general, there should be no more than a 1.0 volt drop throughout the entire starter motor feed and ground circuit. Any voltage drops measured in either the feed or ground circuits after connections have been cleaned will require replacement of the affected battery cable. Typically, any voltage drops measured in the solenoid are repaired by replacing the starter motor.

Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Starter motor. Tighten the bolts to 20-24 ft. lbs. (27-33 Nm). On 2002-05 vehicles, starter heat shield Starter motor electrical connectors. Tighten the battery terminal nut to 106-141 inch lbs. (12-16 Nm). On 2002-05 vehicles, shift cable Negative battery cable Reprogram the radio anti theft codes

run a positive jumper cable from the + battery post to the starter post if it turns over replace battery cable. also check ground cable

Truck will not turn over


Have you checked the starter? You can easily rule out the battery as the root cause by removing it and taking it to most any parts store ie autozone, advanced auto, ect. If the battery is good and the lights on the dash light up upon turning the key to the on position, more likely than not the starter is to blame.

remove the positive battery cable from the post
remove the 3 wires from the starter and the two bolts holding the starter to the block.
reverse the procedure for installation.

Voltage drop test


First, check battery post to cable connection: positive meter lead on battery positive post, negaitve lead on battery's positive cable clamp. Crank the engine and note the reading. A good connection should have zero voltage drop. Second, check the positive cable: positve meter lead on positive battery clamp, negative lead on starter terminal connector. A good cable will show a voltage drop of .2 volts or less while cranking. Third, check the starter connection: positive meter lead on positive battery terminal on the solenoid, negative meter lead on actual starter stud. A good connection will have a voltage drop of near zero volts. Now to check the negative side of the circuit. Total drop on the ground side should be .3 volts or less and can be checked by placing positive meter lead on starter housing and negative meter lead on battery ground post. Take your reading while cranking the engine, and be sure your connection at the starter is solid and clean. If total voltage drop on this side of the circuit is excessive, complete testing at all connections in the same fashion as the positive side of the circuit. Check the following: between battery post and clamp (zero voltage drop), cable end at battery to cable end at engine. (.2 volts or less), cable end at engine to engine itself (near zero voltage drop), and finally between starter housing and engine block (.1 volts or less).
