Possible suspects, bad radiator cap, overheating, not the correct coolant mixture, try these out first

It is 1997 Toyota Avalon, there is a trace of overflow of coolant from the reservoir tank after test driving.(I wanted to buy that used car). Around the tank and coolant cap, some traces show overflo

The car may have a compromised head gasket, forcing air pressure into the cooling system, displacing water/coolant mixture and forcing it out into the reservoir.

This can be expensive to fix if it's the case, but it could be that it has a faulty radiator cap also.

does it have proper antifreeze/anti-boil mixture, or just plain water?
if it's plain water, it may indicate that this is an ongoing problem that the current owner hasn't fixed.

Check the cap and see if it seems loose, the spring inside should be firm, and the inner sealing ring (rubber) should not be cracked or damaged. if the system is leaking, this can cause similar issues where the coolant boils off into the reservoir.

if the cap seems fine, it will likely be a blown head gasket between a cylinder and a water passage, the problem will continue until the gasket is replaced.

I hear water rushing through heater coil when cold and the fan is off. There are no leaks in antifreeze. I own a 2001 saturn sl-1. The water noise is pretty loud and happens in spurts.

make sure the car is hot and the expansion tank is 1/2 full, as you have an air lock in the system, the only way to clear it is to bleed the system by undoing the clip on the highest point, furthest away from the reservoir.when car is hot will help but be very careful,
water under pressure is hotter than boiling point.make sure you do up the clip so that you can top up in between bleeding.

Steam coming from engine

how far away is the repairman? if its less than 2 miles then go ahead. fill up the coolant reservoir AND the radiator locate the radiator cap and fill it too. I dont recommend doing it if you cant fill up the radiator. go early in the morning before it gets hot. if it starts to boil shut it off at the lights. take extra water with you and a rag or gloves and of course the phone. good luck

Radiator coolant or reservoir tank always full

Relax, there is no problem.

When the water / coolant gets hot (inside of radiator/engine) it starts to boil, ofcourse when it boils, it expands, so the fluid in the radiator has to go somewhere, thats why there is the overflow reservoir. So, when the fluid boils, some moves to the reservoir to avoid any potential problems with the radiator, such as it blowing up, or not being able to cool off all of the fluid running through the engine.

But relax, its normal.

Water was boiling and spraying from overflow / reservoir tank from what appears to be a factory made hole. was there a plug in there that might have rotted off and caused this?

well that mean that oone your thermostat is not opening or your water pump or possible that a hose might be collapsing to cause the water not to flow

Water from radiator is boiling over to antifreeze

when does it do this? If it does it right after you shut it off, then its supposed to do that, as your engine will actually get hotter, before it cools down.
