Question about 1997 BMW M3

1 Answer

My electronic computer say that my brake light circuit is out, I've had that fixed once before, I also have the passenger side headlight out. I think that they are both fuse problems and that they may be tied together. I dont have my owners manual with me, and would like to know where the fuse box is located and then the position of the fuses for the passenger side headlight, and brake light circuit

The headlights are on a relay circuit, however your brake lights as well as the headlights run through you switch on the column. This is possibly the culprit.

the fuses u are looking for are as follows:
From the top left first row its# 4
then the bottom row its # 19
I also wanted to point out. from 1989 to 1996 the brake switch was the common failure for bmw's
the series it included were 318i, 525-540i, and all 7 series. if the fuses dont fix it.. its the switch
located under a panel u need remove on the drivers side on the steering collum

SOURCE: my power window in 87 bmw 325i

when you pulled the f use pannel there will be a guild on the reverrse side of it that will you tell you which relay it it is i imaginge its under the hood and yes, if water get's in via moon roof it can reek havoc on the elevtrical system....Pray its a fuse/relay and not a shorted out motor relay internally on the power window motor....But check your fuse replace any that are burnt and for the p-w relay you just have to change it unless you have some one try to push the window button and you have yer ear close to the relay to hear a slight click, if you hear something and nothing happens then its a short between thee and controlls if no noise replace and go from there....Best wish's

SOURCE: both of my brake lights went out at the same time

I Just had the same problem. I found that the bulb socket was inserted in such a way as to cause a short which blows fuse 46 when you press the brake pedal. I also had some bulbs which didn't fit properly. I hope this helps someone out. Also when Fuse 46 blows, you can't start the car till you replace the fuse.

For those of you who don't know where the fuse panel is its on the left "driver's side of American BMW's under the hood nearest the windshield cover by a rectangular black plastic box. It snaps open from the front side.

I took out the whole light assembly and cleaned it and replace all the mismatched bulbs with the correct ones, to be sure I fixed my problem for good. Check control now reads "ok"

All this refers to when you press the pedal all the brake lights stop working and you control center says brake circuit failure.

With headlights off, tail lights and brake lights work. With headlights on, tail lights work. But only one brake light works (drivers side). Why doesn't passenger side brake light work?

Replace the right rear brake light bulb. It is possible that the filament has burnt out and has fallen across to rest on the brake light filament. This would cause the condition you are experiencing.

How to fix the problem

I am just guessing at this one but you might want to check the headlight switch that turns on the headlights. Sounds like you changed just about everything else. The turn signals I believe are on a separate circuit from the brake lights. In addition you might want to check for a broken wire to turn signal harness

I have a 2001 GMC 2500HD. It has a Hayes trailer brake controller installed in it. Even with nothing plugged into the trailer wiring socket, the parking light come on when I activate the brake controller....

It sounds as though you have either a frayed wire between the brake control circuit and tail/running light circuit of the truck side of the plug, or someone wired the truck side of the plug incorrectly.

Think about it. The parking brake lights come on when the controller is activated. More than likely the tail lights are also.

The tail lights are also going to come on when the headlights are on. This would cause the trailer brakes to be activated IF there is a short in the TRUCK side of the plug itself.

That's where I would personally start investigating, The truck side of the trailer plug.

Hope this helps.

I have a 1992 GMC Yukon 4x4 blazer just had it in the shop when it came out the lights are all messed up. headlights work high and low. driver side turn signal dont work , passenger side turn signal don't...

If those lights all worked properly before the shop "fixed" it, take it back to the shop and ask them to make it right. If they are reputable, they will correct the problem(s). If not, think Small Claims Court.

Weird tail light problem

HI Matt,
Your issue sounds like a fault, most likely in the rear lights. Current is feeding from the brake light circuit, into the running light circuit. The most common causes are a bulb filament broken and touching the running light circuit, and loss of ground.
observe the rear lights closely and you should get a clue as to which light is failing....but if not, just pick one....
I would run a temporary ground and test again, if no results, pull the brake light bulbs...
Transient current is often difficult to wrap your mind around, until you understand what can happen.

Troubleshooting 1984 chrysler back brake lights

There is a contact (not short) between wire to brake light and to back light on passenger side, when you press the pedal, electricity is absorbed by barake light bulb and back light dim out. Check cables and connectors, if necessary follow back cables to battery.
If the contact is a short the back lights fuse will blow, I think it is a contact between same polarity cables, not a short.
