This could be caused by a # of issues, do you have a check engine light on. If so I would need the codes to go any further. Most likely it will be a sensor issue, cam sensor, knock sensor, or even a catalytic converter, bit all these will cause a check engine light to come on

How does it idle in park , does it run ruff or smooth? Are any lights lit on the dash , check engine etc. ? Could have a partially plugged IAC air passage .idle air control (IAC) valve ! The engine computer uses the IAC to control idle , when under a load such as when put into gear the computer raises the idle ! It does this by allowing more air to by pass the closed throttle into the engine raising the idle ! If these air passages clog they restrict the air flow an cause a idle problem ! Now if it runs ruff at idle in park you could have vacuum leak ! Rough Idle How to Fix Ford Taurus Engine Stalls at Stop Signs

2002 ESCALADE RUFF IDLE THEN STALLS

Did you check for codes & google them, to see
if there are faults in a system?

Change Spark Plugs every 3 years?

Clean the MAF once or twice a year?

Change Oxygen Sensors at 100,000 miles

Look at Scan Tool Data & Road Test with that tool,
to look at data (that may help tell you if you have
an issue & almost what it is)

Check Fuel Pressure at motor & scan tool fuel pressure (if avail)

Look at TPS Sensor Data or back probe it ,to see if works correctly

Exhaust System Leaks?
Vacuum Leaks?
EGR problems?
Exhaust Converter worn out or partially blocked?

and on we go --lots more

Anytime the check engine light is on, you should check the computer for trouble codes. The codes will point you in the direction of the problem and what to troubleshoot.

Its not had to replace but you have to reset the computer afterwards with a scan tool or the computer will not reconize the new sensor and it will run the same way it did before.

Ruff running Engine-no power-fine at idle

It could be one of three things. EGR valve, IAC (Idle Air Control), and last your cat being clogged. Not likely to be a clogged converter unless you have but the Ford through some pretty good hell. I would go with the EGR and IAC first and check those out first then move on from there
