You dont state which engine but the most obvious answer would be that a piston is now jammed against a valve in one of the cylinders. Do not attempt to start the vehicle, this will bend tha valve if its not bent already. Get a wrench/socket that will fit over the crankpulley bolt and gently attempt to turn the engine first one way and then the other. If you are able to move the crank in one way then yes, a piston was making contact with a valve. In this case replace the timing belt. Dont expect too much from the engine at startup. If it runs rough/misfires you probably have a bent valve. Have a compression test done to confirm this. In the event of a bent valve you will have to get the head off and reworked, replacing valves and possibly guides and seats as well.

Yes, be careful not to try to turn engine as pistons will come up and bend valves.

This is a "non interference egine", so if the belt breaks it will never "lock" the engine up, I suggest the T belt may have broken due to a failure in the engine.

SOURCE: Timing belt is broken. Interference or non interference motor?

Most Ford vehicles from 1985 and up have enough valve clearence so the valves do not get hit when the timing belt snaps. Since I worked for ford for many years I have only seen one with valve damage and the youg man said he was driving his car really hard at high RPM's. I believe you will be okay on your engine as long as when the belt broke the engine was not at high rpm's. If know one has told you those engine recommend a timing belt replacement every 60k. I hpe this helped and I hope this fixes your problem. Good luck, Roger

Timing belt will not tur all other belts ar all other belts are turning

It must be broke, if the crankshaft is turning all the other belts, but not the timing belt. Pull off the timing belt cover to investigate. If the belt is good, maybe the woodruff key for the crankshaft sprocket has fell out. You would see the crankshaft turning, but not the crankshaft sprocket that turns the timing belt-if that were the case.

Replace the timing belt and the car will not crank

Always crank motor over by hand with a ratchet or breaker bar before attempting to start with key. You can very well ruin or lock up your motor if the timing is incorrect before you try to start with key. If its locked up, unhook battery. Place ratchet and socket on crank pully. rotate in reverse and then try to rotate forward. If there is anything holding the motor from turning by hand, pull timing belt and make sure everything is aligned correctly and try to crank by hand again 2 or 3 revolutions. If tight or locked, then motor needs inspected for bent, jammed valves, broken pistons.

The motor turns over but will not start. It is getting fire and gas.

this leads to either a timing belt or timing chain, depending on if the engine has been replaced.you did'nt specify what engine so i will give you my diagnostic. either a timing belts broken,or a timing chains broken.if you have fuel, and you have fire,at the same time, the engine has to be out of time. so sometings slipped, more than likely,a belt, timing.

Here is a link to a tip I wrote nate. It sounds like your timing belt slipped a tooth or ten. Or it may be broken. Does the starter motor seem like its turning the motor much faster than it normally does? You say that you can see the external drive belts turning, if this is true then your starter is engaging correctly. If your timing is off, or belt is broken, the engine will not make compression. Put your hand over the intake while someone cranks it to see if you feel that intake stroke pull on your hand. Read my tip in the link above for lots more info.

Smoke is coming from the carburater when itry to start it, a puff of smoke comes from the carb, and theengine just turns

this sounds like the cam belt may have broken if the engine wont run at all, if it still runs then im thinking its a head gasket blowen or an inlet valve is not seating right (ie: bent or badly pitted) and its venting the inlet manifold so your seeing a puff of partly undurnt fule or smoke! check with a compreshion tester all the cylinders they should have at least 150,,180 psi if very low then tip in a small drop of engine oil and retest,, if one or more cylinders are still low (ie: both next to each other) its a head gasket blown also look behind the frount cam belt cover to check if the cam shaft is turning around if its not the belt has broken,, and you may well need a recon cylinder head as it would have bent some of the valves in the head,,,,normaly if the cam drive belt has broken the motor just locks up, but if it did not lock up it will spin over very fast and would not even try to fire up,, its about 5 to 8 hours work changing the head gasket and fitting a "new cam belt",,

You sould replace the belt along with the timing belt. If it gets caught in the timing belt you will have MAJOR EGINE DAMAGE!

Broken timing belt. engine turns over and put a wrench on cam shafts and they turn over pretty good

have someone perform a leak down test on each cylinder. This will tell you if you possibly bent a valve on any of the cylinders. If you did you need to remove the cyl. head to have it looked at. If the leak down test is good on all cylinders you should be good with just replacing the timing belt and tensioner. The likely hood that you didn't bend a valve is slim since that motor is an interference motor.
