This particular switch which you describe is notorius for going bad, you may need to replace it. Removal is done by reaching behind the paddles and pressing in the little tabs you see under them as you gently pull on tabs. There is four tabs on the inside to press in, press the right ones in first, then the left ones. and the switch should come out without having to dismantle the dash instrument shroud. I am about to replace yet anotherone of these myself for the third time. (sighs)

Of course you may want to eliminate the possibility of a blown fuse and faulty relay that provides power to the headlights as well. This relay is located somewhere on the side of the engine compartment if I recall correctly.

The age of your mustang warrants the head light switch replacement. Do not be aggressive when switching these head light switches to the off position. They are fragile due to their design and will not stand abuse. Also they are expensive

Can not get my tail lights to work onk 1989 gmc truc

The front park lights work correct? If the front park lights work than there is not a problem with the light switch since the brown wire from the switch supplies power to the front park lights, front side markers, and the rear taillights. There should be twelve volts on the brown wire from the headlight switch with the connector plugged in and the park lights turned on. If this is true that there is a problem with the wiring to the back of the vehicle. A thorough inspection of the harness should reveal the problem. The dim break and blinkers support the above. High resistance also know as corrosion, in the wires or connections would cause this problem.

1989 eagle premier head light switch is not turning on head lights just the park lights but when i pull the arm for the high beams i get them as long as you kep holding it checked fuses and relays

The fault can be with the cluster switch as the HIGH BEAM is switched and so the relay is working. The failure of the switch contacts of the main which is the park along with the headlights is to be confirmed.
If you are able to carefully JUMP the +12 from the headlight switch position and if the lights work the fault is confirmed.

I just bought a 2003 ford mustang and i'm not sure how to turn the head lights on.

The headlight switch is on the dash. It's a 2 position push/pull switch, the first position is the parking lights and the second position is the head lights, it also controls the dimming function by rotating it left or right.
