Is it safe to drive whilst the yellow engine symbol is on the dashboard?

If it is the check engine light, Yellow light that looks like a engine, or may say "Check engine", Yes, it is safe to drive until you can get it checked. As long as the vehicle is driving normal. If the light starts flashing, DO NOT DRIVE it. A flashing check engine light means a misfire and could cause a fire due to raw fuel going down the exhaust into the cat converters.

My cars check engine light went on and it became sluggish, then i notieced i was running 4000 rpms at 50 mph

Hi there:
When the light comes on, one or more diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) are stored in the engine control module. These DTCs remain even if the light goes out. To address a Check Engine Light problem, the DTCs are retrieved and the appropriate troubleshooting information is followed in order to determine the problem.

The Four Most Common Check Engine Light Scenarios and What to Do:
* The Check Engine Light turns on and off or flickers.
If the Check Engine Light comes on in the city but goes off on the freeway, then the fault is present during city driving conditions. Pay attention to whether or not the vehicle runs or drives any differently when the Check Engine Light illuminates. If vehicle performance does change, drive the car as little as possible and take it to be checked by a service professional as soon as possible. If there is no change in vehicle performance, you can drive home, but have it inspected as soon as possible. In this condition, you run a risk of the vehicle dying or not starting.

* The Check Engine Light comes on and stays on.
If the Check Engine Light illuminates constantly during driving with no noticeable driving or performance problems, there is a permanent fault in the emission control system. When this happens, the computer that controls the emission system usually has a backup program that runs while the fault is present. (These backup programs are often referred to as "limp home" mode programs.) You should get the vehicle serviced as soon as possible, but in most cases, the vehicle will continue to operate, though you run a risk of it dying or not starting.

* The Check Engine Light illuminates, stays on, and there are performance problems.
This means that a vital component of your emission control and engine management system has a serious problem. It usually involves a component or system needed for the vehicle to run at all. In most cases, drive the vehicle as little as possible. In many cases, the vehicle is not safe to drive at all -it could stop or stall out at any moment. It is best to pull over to a safe place and have the vehicle towed to an automotive diagnostician for a thorough inspection and repair.

* The Check Engine Light light comes on and blinks in a steady pattern while driving.
Don't confuse this steady pulsing of the Check Engine Light light (usually one or more flashes per second) with a flicker (see above). The Check Engine Light may stay on steadily or it may flash when the vehicle is accelerated. This is very serious. There is a severe failure of the emission control system that is causing the engine to misfire to the point that the catalytic converter is damaged each time the Check Engine Light flashes. It may mean that the catalytic converter is overheating to the point that it will glow red or, in extreme cases, start a fire on the underside of the vehicle. Immediately pull over to a safe place and have your vehicle towed to an automotive diagnostician for repair. Vehicles can be severely damaged and even destroyed by fire if this condition is ignored for too long.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

A few days ago the check engine light turn on in my 2004 Chrysler Sebring and I got the code P0137. The light went off the next day but I still took the car into the dealer and they changed out the O2...

COULD HAVE SHORT IN WIRING CIRCUIT OR PCM PROBLEMS.IT WOULD NOT BE SAFE TO DRIVE CAR WITH O2 SENSOR FAULT. BECAUSE FUEL MIXTURE WOULD BE TOO RICH CAUSING CATALYTIC CONVERTER DAMAGE CAUSING IT TO OVERHEAT GET RED HOT UNDER CAR CAUSE FIRE AND YOU WOULD HAVE A LOT OF FUEL CONSUMPTION .I WOULD NOT DRIVE CAR.BETTER TO USE A RENTAL CAR FOR LONG TRIP GET CAR CHECK OUT AGAIN AT THE DEALERSHIP.

Just went to drive my 2008 Toyota Sienna and the Check Engine/VSC/Trac lights came on. Owner's Manual says take to dealer. I opened and screwed on my gas cap again, but when I started the engine the...

yes, but you will not have traction control available. The lights mean that trouble codes have been set. If you are worried about driving a long distance to a dealership, any major auto parts store will be able to read out the codes for free and even reset the lights if you wish.

I went to start my van today and the check engine light and abs light came on and none of my gauges or odometer work. what may be the cause?

The "check engine" warning light advises that the vehicle is in "fail safe" mode. This means only some of the car's capabilities are operational, just enough to get you to the nearest service point. You probably should not drive. Have your service man download and analize the fault codes from the ECM which will indicate what the problem is.

ESC light came on when driving - then check engine light

Likley there is a misfire in one of the cylinders. Usually due to worn out sparkplugs or wires. A check by the local mechanic, using his/her computor will pinpoint the problem. Or go to your local auto supply store & purchase the little computor to connect to your car computor (under dash at steering wheel). This will allow you to turn off the light. Cost is about $170.00 (Can.)
Hope this helps!

Engine malfunction light just came on.

As long as the check engine light is not flashing, it is safe to drive the car. However, you always want to have diagnostics run as soon as possible. I had a problem with my x-type before where the check engine light would come on but performance was not affected. Turned out to be a faulty gas tank cap. From other sources I have found out one other common problem is the hoses under the plastic engine block cover. They tend to crack easily.

To be able to assist you better, we do need to find out why the check engine light came on. There are plenty of places (AutoZone is one of them) that will hook your car up to a diagnostic computer for free. That should give you a better idea as to where the problem might be originating from. If you can, post the result of a diagnostic test here. I might be able to help you better once I have that information.

Thank you for using the fixya forums!

Check engine light was on then went off now back onagain

Q1: What to do if my "Check Engine" light is on?
A1: The simplest way is to visit your local dealer for proper diagnostic. They have all the equipment and information needed to correct the problem. The problem might even be covered by the manufacturers warranty and possibly repaired free of charge.

Q2: Is it safe to drive if my "Check Engine" light is on?
A2: It really depends what code is stored and what caused it. In worst cases driving with "Check engine" light may cause more damage to the vehicle. A car may even stall while driving. If your check engine light came on, I'd certainly recommend to visit your dealer or a mechanic as soon as possible, just to be on a safe side. If the Check Engine light is flashing, this means that the engine computer (ECM) has detected that your engine is misfiring, which could damage your catalytic converter. Have the your vehicle inspected as soon as possible.
