Question about 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe

1 Answer

When you open the hood to your left (the passengers side) there is a belt on a pulley, is this the water pump - the car is making a noise that sounds like a loose belt?? Do you know what it could be, just had the water pump replaced.

You should only see one belt which powers the alternator, air conditioner compressor, power steering and water pump. Without hearing the sound it is hard to say which component could be the problem. However, If you cannot hear the noise when the air conditioner is off and the noise reappears when it is turned on it could be the A/C compressor. With the engine off you can inspect the belt for damage and make sure the pulley bolts and belt are tight. If a mechanic installed the pump they should take a minute to listen to the noise at no charge to explain the noise.

I have the same issue as the poster and the pulley seems as though it's wobbling side to side and making a knocking sound. Was told by a friend that this happened to him on a different make and model, and the pulley or belt (not sure) broke leaving him stranded on the highway. The noise does not seem to be affected by the A/C. I hear the knocking after starting the engine, when driving at low speeds, or when idling in traffic or at stop signs. My 01 Santa Fe has thus far given me very few problems since I drove it off the lot in 2001 w/ 15 miles on the odometer, so I'm more than a little concerned that this will be a major/expensive fix. Any extra information would be helpful!

I have a 2000 Dodge Stratus and on the passenger side front under the hood I am hear a loud whining sound, some people is telling me it's the water pump but not leaking, started but it start fine,...

I believe the Dodge Stratus has a timing belt operated water pump so this is what you can do. Disconnect the main drive belt for the a/c compressor and the alternator and start the vehicle and if it still makes the whinning noise than it is most likely going to be the water pump, if it does no longer make that noise check the pulley's on the a/c compressor and the alternator to make sure that the bearings are okay.... mkkkayyy hope that helps, good day

2000 Cadillac DeVille sounds like prop-plane on acceleration

Could be the serpentine belt rubbing on something, but is probably a bearing problem in the belt idler pulley. However, it could be the power steering pump, AC compressor clutch or generator. As the water pump is at the opposite end of the engine, it's probably not that.

Bad oil pump ?

Turn your A/C off, the compressor can make noise if bearings are dry or system is low on compressor oil.
Remove your serpentine belt. Turn pulleys by hand to check for roughness. Bearings in those pulleys routinely go bad.
You may get computer warnings with the following test, but with serpentine belt removed, run engine for 2 or 3 minutes. Do this on a warm engine after serpentine belt is removed. The warm oil will not mask the problem like cold thick oil can. Noise generated means problem is internal.
If this is a stick shift transmission sometimes the clutch bearing can make noise and is a sign that bearing is bad.

How do you know when its the timing chain on a 2001 chevy cavalier

left side? when talking about left and right on a car its always referred from the drivers seat... so drivers side is left passenger side is right. if the noise is coming from the passenger side it could be a timing chain but more likely to be a water pump or idler pulley for the serpentine belt. take off serp belt and start car. if noise is gone u have a bad pulley or alternator or power steering pump.. hope this helps

I took my 2005 Chev. Malibu in for an oil change and now it is making a loud noise from the engine. they say its the water pump? is that possible?

  • Hi, I can help.
  • When your water pump goes bad it will begin to grind. I had one I let got far to long and it sounded deafening when I opened the hood. You can open your hood and listen and see for yourself. The water pump is on the belt line, left side under the hood, last pulley toward the rear.
  • Now if your asking can an oil change effect the water pump? No, not at all. Water pumps go sporadically.
  • It would be odd that you heard no noises before the oil change and now the water pump is loud enough to take notice after the oil change. The bearings usually go a little slower than that.

  • I would be interested in some more of the details to this. And what your overall concerns are. I'd be happy to further. help. Otherwise get a second opinion on your cars condition.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Regards, Tony

2004 gmc envoy. has a 6cyl and a serp belt. the center pully off set to the left (i think its a water pump) has a bad wobble and making a horrible noise. Not over heating and no leaks. should i just change...

If the fan is attached to it than it is the water pump making the noise and it will need to be replaced. If the fan clutch is not attached to it than it is either the idler pulley or the tensioner pulley. The tensioner is on the passenger side (left) of the front of the motor.

My 2006 2.0 litre turbo volkswagon passat started making this very loud whistling noise yesterday evening when i left owrk. The car had warmed up and I start hearing this noise. What could this be? No...

You are the bestt person to identtify the source of the sound before we can go about a long check list. so open up the bonnet if you think it is from the engine side. Look for possible noise from
1. water pump
2. Alternator bearings
3. Idler pulley
4.AC clutch pulley
5. Belts..Tip Is: try to pour some water over the belt to confirm
6. main crank pulley
Hope you check this out. Helpful I hope. Good day

1999 neon making a loud screeching noise under hood passenger side

It sounds like you have a belt or pulley problem, or possibly a bad bearing in the alternator, or water pump. I would suggest, having it looked at, by a mechanic right away.

Where is the water pump located on a 2000 Saturn

Standing on the passenger side of the car with the hood open looking down into the engine bay you will see the serpentine belt. If you have air conditioning, look directly below the air compressor pulley, the next one down is the water pump. Another easy way to find it is to find the lower radiator hose (again on the passenger side of the engine) and follow it to the engine block, the pulley where the hose meets the block is the water pump (not the pulley, but what the pulley spins is the pump).

1992 bonneville transmisson won't engage

not likely possibly the cover for torque converter may be loose. if rattling coming from pass. side may be belt tensioner/or water pump. to check shut engine off remove serp. belt check water pump pulley for play by wiggling back an forth do same with belt tensioner. check trans fluid level while on level surface engine warm&running tranny in park. some gm cars have had problems with crank shaft pulleys making rattling noise also.
