The timing chain needs tightened, or maybe replaced. You can use the tensioners on the lower gear pulleys for that.

At what mileage should a timming chain be replaced?

Timing chains are never replaced unless the enginme is being rebuilt or it fails, this is not true of timing belts which are rubber drive belts for the cam or cams, they are replaced at about 90,000 miles This car doesn't use a timing belt in the 3.1 Liter V6 used in this car.

My timing chain is ratteling

If it's the DOHC engine, I would change it ASAP. There are chain guides and a chain tensioner, if those wear too much, it could jump time and then you'll have big problems.e06b139.jpg

Something is obviously not proper in the timing case.
Pick up a Chilton's manual, which should give you all the info needed,to rectify your situation. Good luck.

Car repair manual for a 1997 suzuki vitara v6 2ltr petrol 24v

Haynes don't cover that engine. I've found a copy of the H25 engine manual which is similar to the H20 engine we have. If you search for SQ416 in google you'll find a copy you can buy or if you're lucky you'll find a free download somewhere like I did!! :-) It has helped me loads.

Just the guide is probably making the noise. So either a new guide or a new chain. I would start with guide first, unless chain looks loose or cruddy

1997 vitara v6 2ltr service manual

From Suzuki? This wouldn't be a fun job in-car as, for starters, the inlet manifold needs to be raised so the rocker covers can be removed! The manifold can only be raised so far, then the throttle body hits the firewall - so you may like to remove that as well. Then the camshafts have to be removed (all 4). This means messing with the timing chains - there are 3, but you'll only have to mess with 2. Remember, you'll probably want to still be able to turn the motor over by hand so that the cylinder you're working on is at BDC when you put the compressed air in to keep the valves shut before removing the valve springs. Removing the timing cover will solve any possibility of timing issues because of dropped chains, but the 2 studs in the timing cover for locating the sump will have to be removed. I would recommend replacing all tensioners and chains if you get this far. I would suggest this job will be a lot easier by removing the cylinder heads then doing the stem seals out-of-car.
