Question about 2002 Chevrolet Impala

2 Answers

The car started intermittently not starting, the dash lights came on but nothing else. The security light would not blink but would normally comes on. It became more frequent to the point I would have to turn the key many many times until the car decided to turnover. Sometimes the car would start right up, other times it had PMS! The key ignition housing has been replaced, i have already gone through the relearn process more than once. An "car electrical expert" could not figure this out after spending 4 hours on it. I had him remove the aftermarket alarm / remote stater, since a GM dealership suggested that could be the cause of my problems. (they also said if it wasn't, it could be an ignition switch inside the steering column). At this time, the wiring has been returned to stock and the car will not start at all! I was able to remote start it with a under the hood hand held switch, but stalls out (passlock??) What else could I look into other than a new car cpu that the dealership will cost an arm and a leg and a few fingers??

There is a device called a passlock system. It is a security system in all GM vehicles. You can bypass this by purchasing passlock2 bypass.
Some people may tell you it's your computer. Don't believe them it won't help. It's the passlock system.

Ok... However, doesn't a remote start suppose to bypass a GM passlock?

remote start actually doesn't bypass it. Buying a passlock will bypass the remote start.
Do check to see if you have a fuel pump safety cutoff switch under passenger side kick panel which also could cause this.

  • craig37777 Aug 06, 2010

also, if i wanted to buy one off of ebay or amazon, what do I need to look for? Passkey 3?? So many different ones and prices, making my head spin.

2002 has the passlock 2 system

  • craig37777 Aug 07, 2010

btw.. I'm confused.. I thought my remote start bypassed the passlock system to begin with? It was bypassed using a permanent resister. The only thing those bypass modules do is read the resistance from the key cylinder and send that resistance to the computer so the car will start. But if I can't do it manually then it won't be able to do it automatically.??????

You will need to order the GM passlock VATS bypass kit and install it into your 2002 Chevy Impala to get rid of the starting problem you are having. Click on the link below to view:

BTW.. The car wouldn't start with the remote start either.. this would prob not work since the remote start would bypass the gm passlock

  • Anonymous Aug 06, 2010

This would work and it will bypass the alarm system and ignition. (does not have to be remote start) I have seen this question a hundred times here on fixya.com and this is what everyone has agreed as the solution. The only problem is you would have to buy it and this may hurt the pocketbook

So what's the difference in my alarm / remote start that DOES bypass passlock and the ones described in the website? I had a similar problems 3 years ago (starting and stalling out immediately) and it was caused by poor installation. After a rewire I didn't have a problem until now. Looking at the alarm system manual (Hornet n553t) It has a passlock bypass already, so I'm not too sure your "answer is correct"

I have a 96 Olds Cutlass Supreme that intermittently won't start

If the lights on the dash all come on but the engine wont turn over it could be a problem with the VAT security system. Your key has a little chip on it between the teeth and the handle. This is a common problem with GMs', often just replacing the key is necessary but sometimes the VAT module needs to be replaced.

Red blinking warning light beside clock in center of dash. What is it?

This is the factory installed "Security" light. It blinks to let you know that the security system is active, and to ward off potential theives. It's part of the factory anti-theft system. Also, it is a diode, and consumes virtually no battery power.
Normal condition; nothing to worry about.
