Question about 2007 Aston Martin DB9 Coupe

1 Answer

My 2007 DB9 Volante just developed a very bad shimmy throughout the whole car but most noticably in the steering wheel. The shimmy begins at about 35mph. The problem did not exist when the car was put away in its garage one week ago but it showed up as soon as it was driven. This is a manual shift car and the shimmy is there in all gears, the car idle's smoothly. It was not damaged in the garage and shows no visable problem.

Do Ball Joints have to be inspected? Replaced? How Often?

here is how to inspect, refer to general picture, using lever under wheel pull up on lever if movement is noticed at joint they need replacing, can feel movement if you leave your other hand on wheel at top. jack must be placed in under arm for one ball joint to be checked and then under crossmember for other. usually check when suspension problem/steering problem is noticable or bad tyre wear, looseness feel in steering(slop) when shimmy steering wheel one way and then the other.

If your tires were not properly balanced then it will cause that. Also, if your rotors are warped then icould cause this to happen. YOu would also notice it when braking if rotors are warped.

Since you can make it better by unloading the tire a little I would suspect a wheel bearing. You also may just have a bad ball joint. Also if the tires were just rotated and you developed the problem you may have a defective tire.

2005 jeep shimmy's (steering wheel and all)

Good excuse! You need to find a shop that does alignments and have special attention to caster. However, did the shake happen from when you first got it or did it develop over time? Check all front components for wear (by all I mean all) especially ball joints and steering damper (the sideways shock on the linkage) All can cause this condition.
