At least two and if you have all time 4 wheel drive it is extreamly important that you have the same size tires on both sides as if not you will ruin your differential ( also check spare size as you dont want to be stranded some where with out it)

sounds like it time to have the front end balljoints inspected. Only with an inspection will you get the proper results. Why guess, this is a safety issue.

What is the stock tire size for a 1996 jeep cherokee 4wd

You should have a tire sticker either inside the glove box or on the door near the latch. Most come with a 215x70 (or 75)x15 but on the first tire change most people go to a 225. You can put a 235 on there but it's my feeling that that tire is just a bit on the large side. On 4x4 vehicles you need to replace all four tires at the same time or you can damage the transfer case (rolling distance of each tire needs to be very close to all others or the transfer case cannot adequately compensate and will fail)

Stuck in four wheel

make sure your tire pressures and sizes are all the same then try backing a go froward while turning. and moving the shifter in and out of 4x4. if that does not get it then get all 4 tires off the ground with jack stands and allow the wheels to turn slowly while you move the shifter in and out of 4x4. USE CAUTION IF SPINNING ALL 4 WHEELS OF THE GROUND. if that does not get then the t-case will likely need to be disassembled and looked into.
