I had 89 that did that and it was the plug wires, cap & rotor replace all 3. It also could be your cad converter pluged, only if its getting hot

Fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, Idle air control valve, mass air flow sensor, faulty plugs, faulty injectors. If there is any codes set that is where I would start. The check engine light code is going to tell you somewhat what is going on. There are too many different things that there can be. My guess is mass air flow sensor or something with the fuel.

Faulty air flow meter

If the idle air control valve is bad, you'll have trouble with rough idle, stalling, surging etc. along with the sluggishness. The Mass Air Flow sensor is more likely the cause. Not sure where you're located but at AutoZone, you can return the part if you have to.

I have a 2003 ford expedition with a 4.6l in it. The service engine soon light came on the other day I took it to auto zone they said it was to lean they said mass air flow sensor. Every once in a while it...

If the mass air flow sensor is not working it will not get the correct air fuel mixtre in the engine and it will stall, sputter, miss and die. This needs replaced by the symptons your describing. You can replace this youself. It is in the air intake system. When you buy a new one you will be able to see the old one and replace it.

What causes the engine is at normal operating temperature idle roughly and die?

I would check the mass air flow sensor that is located on the air intake (its the box in line on the air intake with wires going into it) with the engine running take a screw driver and smack the mass air flow sensor with the handle... if the engine stalls or starts running real rough that might be the culprit.
