Question about 1989 Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

89 Cherokee will start just just fine but will not run for more than 5 or 10 min, then just quit on me. Any suggestions. I'd like to start cheapest and work my way up. I just bought it so replacing small things is in ym future anyway. Alternator has already been replaced

For a general place to look at, it could be a fuel or electrical problem so i would start with the fuel pump and work my way to the front.listen for a really noisy fuel pump ,good indicator its bad.check for spark at the plugs by takeing off 1 wire at a time and useing a spare plug and grounding it,if its a bluish type spark its good.check the fuel pressure reg to by idleing the jeep and then put a vacume to it.if it does nothing then it bad.

Have an 89 grand wagoneer it will run fine but it will shut off and wont start to it has cooled down i am going to replace pickup coil!fuel pump.and e c u any suggestions??

Before you just start spending money, find out WHY it stops.

Run it till it quits, then check the spark. If no spark then fix that.
If no fuel, then fix THAT.

An engine needs five things to run; Ignition (spark), Fuel, air, timing, compression.

When it quits, find out what of these five your motor doesn't have, and only fix that.

You could spend hundreds and still not fix it if you don't know what is really wrong with it.

Jeep stalls after 20 mins of runtime

Possible partially plugged filter, but also check ign could be "breaking down" when it gets hot!!!
Was distributor a guess, or was there a problem there? When it stalls, is there spark? Does it re-start and run normally after that?
