Hi. Before any more parts are replaced, get three garages to give you their recommendation and price. Pricing is very regional nowdays. I use the site called repairpal.com to pinpoint the price of repairs in your locale. J.

It's 2001 stratus I was told that its the rack and pinion but its very noisy sounds like the steering pump but has a full resevoiur so I'm not sure

the pump will make noise if it is going out & full of fluid it could be the rack but most likely the pump & less money to start with the pump

Power steering hard

Hey Kumar,
Does the steering get easier when it gets hot? If it get easier when hot, its the rack and pinion gear. The valve body (actually a teflon composition ring(s) o-rings/valve bore housing are getting worn to the point where they are not controlling the fluid flow when its cold,, when the rack and pinion gets hot, the valve bore expands and "corrects" the clearance which in turn, controls the fluid flow. The valve body bore in the rack and pinion housing is worn where the teflon rings ride against the bore.
This is nothing that can be fixed except by replacing the entire rack and pinion gear. Drain ALL the power steering fluid from the pump also and fill with fresh new fluid.

My power steering in my 2001 GMC sierra does not work. Someone said maybe it was the pump, but then it was said maybe its the rack and pinion. There is absolutely no power steering, but there isnt a noise...

Well it really could be either one.
The impeller or a valve inside the pump could have failed, and so could a seal inside the rack.
You would need to disconnect the pump and test it to see if it is capable of pushing fluid.

My 2003 ford focus lost it's power steering, mechanic replaced the rack and pinion thing - lost steering again and now the mechanic says it is the power steering pump. The rack and pinion was replaced...

if the rack and pinion was not leaking or causing problems. then he may of made a wrong move! if the rack was fine before, and you just lost power steering. then it is most likely the power steering pump or the lines that go from rack to the pump. good-day ! if a rack goes bad, you will get a bad steering problem or just bad steering.

Power steering noise on turning; noticed no power

Check the ends of your rack & pinion for signs of a leak. If a leak is present, replace the rack & pinion. If no leaks, maybe your power steering pump is going out.

POWER STEERING PUMP OR HOSE HAS NO SET TIME OR MILEAGE TO FAIL WHEN THEY WEAR OUT THEY WILL FAIL ANY TIME.I WOULD HAVE POWER STEERING HOSE REPLACE FIRST.IF YOUR STEERING WAS NORMALWORKING GOOD BEFORE HOSE RUPTURE NO NOISES OR HARD STEERING.REPLACE POWER STEERING HOSE.BECAUSE POWER STEERING PUMP AND RACK PINION UNIT GOING TO COST RIGHT MUCH.ALSO BY IT BEING A IMPORT.

1998 for windstar gl..grinding noise in steering

i don't think it is the pump. The pump would generally make a noise all the time because the motor's belt is what powers your power steering pump. Sometimes you will hear it bog down the motor when it is being turned all the way to one side or the other but that sould be about it. The grinding you described sounds like a rack and pinion problem and not anything to do with the pump itself. I hope im wrong because rack and pinion fixes are much more expensive and time comsuming to repair
