Yes belt tesioner is internal part of cooling system it has two plastic elbows with o-rings that crack crumble and deterioate haven,t seen crack in aluminum part though but remove belt by releasing tensioner remove alternator and idler pulley then remove bolts holding tensioner assembly to head and block this entire thing can be purchased thru napa i know but do not reuse the plastic elbows and make sure to lubricate the o-rings on new elbows so when istalled puthe the elbows in the assembly first lower it in place lined up with waterholes and gently push in and slide in place

We need replace the serpentine belt on a 1998 Buick Lasabre

Easy job on those vehicles. Usually need a wrench that fits over the belt tensioner, and you raise or lower it, taking tension off the belt. then just slip it off the nearest pulley-often the alternator pulley. Now you can let go of the tensioner and remove belt. Notice how it is fit. There should be a diagram on a sticker of how the belt fits on.

Transmissions on 2003 buick lasabre/3800 engine seems to interchange with chevy impala/3800 but the torque converter has a different diameter.buick has a 258mm dia. torque converter.chevy has 245mm.

The converter will most likely fit on the transmission input shaft; they are fairly consistent among a brand. The issue is the diameter and depth of the converter may cause clearance issues in the transmission bell housing depending upon whether you are trying to reuse the larger or smaller of the two.

How do i remove belt from the ac,alternator, water pump on a 97 Buick regal 3800

Using a 15mm wrench on the tensioner pulley bolt, release the tension by pulling on the bolt and it will slacken off allowing for belt removal

Engine makes whining sound

Take the belt off and spin all of the pulleys. the bad component should be obvious. high pitch whine is usually alternator bearing for the 98 3800 its timkin part# 100ccab or it can be the power steering pump(but the pitch will change as your steering if it is that) water pump, idler and tensioner pulleys(if you have to change either one, replace the tensioner itself). if you have the supercharged model there are a few parts that can whine( or the s/c is low on oil.)

How to locate and change water pump on 2000 buick lesabre, 6 cylinder engine

I assume you have a 3800 V6 motor in that model car. When standing with the hood open on the passenger side of the car, the water pump is located in the center of the engine. The pulley will have four small (8mm) bolts. To remove: Loosen the 4 bolts on water pump pulley.
Use 13mm socket wrench on tensioner pully to rotate and pull tension off of serpentine drive belt. Take belt off of tensioner and water pump pulleys, bend back out of the way. Finish removing water pump pulley bolts and remove pully. Remove water pump bolts (there are several of 2 different sizes, 10mm and 13mm) . Remove old pump by prying gently around the pump rim to break the gasket's seal, or tap shaft with a rubber hammer. Remove all signs of gasket material on engine mating surface with a scraper and then some fine sandpaper (1000 grit wet/dry) or steel wool. Use high-tack sealant to mate gasket to new water pump, allow to set to a few minutes. Use high-tack again on engine mating surface, allow to set a few minutes, then put water pump to engine using the small bolts tightening them finger tight. Put a small amount of black RTV sealant on larger, long bolt ends about 1/2 " of threads covered. Insert longer/larger bolts and tighten finger tight. Tighten all bolts to firm hand tight using a criss-cross pattern starting in the center top to bottom, then side to side.Do not overtighten, as damage to your new pump or striping thread holes out will result. Allow assembly to set 1/2 hour for sealants to cure. Install pump pulley. Install drive belt. Refill coolant level. Start engine, allow to warm up and check for leaks. Done! :)

Diagram for 1998 buick lasabre serpentine belt

I found the diagram in my owner's manual.
I replaced the belt on mine just 2 days ago. All you need to do is remove one bolt from the lower motor mount and remove the spacer. After you relieve the belt tensioner, the belt will slip right through the gap. Don't forget to support the engine before removing the bolt. As a backup I took a photo of the belt with my digital camera beforehand... just in case.

Round machined hole in water pump housing leaking coolant

The hole is there to let you know the antifreeze seal in the pump is leaking. You need a new (or rebuilt ) pump installed immediately. Please change the belt and any tensioners while you are at it...

To replace the serpentine belt on a V6 3800 you must jack up the motor and remove a motor mount. You must then use a breaker bar with a socket (13/64") and pull it toward the front of the car to release the belt tensioner. Put the new belt on, tighten it, put the mount back on, and lower the jack.
Driving without a belt can cause the motor to overheat, will cut power steering, and will not recharge the battery, so you should probably get a tow
Good Luck

1997 BUICK LASABRE

Yeah on that vehicle there is a 90 degree plastic elbow that goes from the belt tensioner to the intake manifold and on both ends there are O-rings. Definitely need to repair this as soon as possible. Not sure your technical abilities but you would need to remove the serpentine belt and alternator and a bracket if I'm not mistaken. Usually takes me about 45 minutes to repair but I have been doing it for awhile. Good luck and Happy wrenching!!!
