Question about 1991 GMC K2500

My 1992 gmc k2500 with 454 engine sputters and cuts out and the rpm guage jumps around wildly alt between 1700 and 2000 rpms. I've replaced the throttle position sensor and the ignition control modual. and cleaaned the vacuum system with seafoam. now i'm stumped. any help would be great. thanks

    I don't have a book yet. where and how do I check the egr? sorry for the inexperince. also i have replace the cap and rotor, plugs and fuel filter. thanks

    I cant post comments any more i guess. The vaccum line going to my egr runs through an electrical box with a small air filter and 3 wire(i think) plug. i disconected the egr valve and capped the conections and it ran better for a few seconds then went back. when i test it i'm driving. also it was doing this before the plugs and everything thanks

Check the EGR for proper operation,it could cause this type of issue!

    I don't have a book yet. where and how do I check the egr? sorry for the inexperince. also i have replace the cap and rotor, plugs and fuel filter. thanks

    I know where the egr valve is and a cntrol unit that the vacuum runs through but I don't know how to check if its working right.

    If the EGR just has a vacum hose to it simply,disconect it and plug the hose end.This should just be for testing and not for permanent

    road operation.(had to put that in there!) Also do you get a check engine light on? Did the problem happen before you put the new plugs in?

    I unplugged the vaccum line and capped the ends and it worked for a min then went back to sputtering. I do have a check engine light on. and this was happening before the plugs or any other matanence. the vacuum for the egr valve runs through a box with a small air filter and a 3wire (i think) plug. when i test i drive the truck. thanks

    Another important thing to is i have an exaust leak at the manifold on the passengers side. could this be causing it?

Have you tried to put a timing light on it to see if your timing is correct? Chevys/ GMC's are known to have Nylon teeth on the stock crank shaft timing gear, and after about 80,000 miles they become loose and separate from the center, and will cause the time to jump around and will even make the engine pop and backfire from time to time. I've had to replace several of these stock timing gears with double roller timing chains and gears. cost is around $28-$45 for the set

Have you checked for vacuum leaks around the throttle body or intake manifold? If not try that.

cold oil is thicker, higher rpm=more pressure .factory guage is actually working like it should. if worried hook external guage on oil galley plug and check oil press.manually.

When you say "sputters at 2000 rpm" , are you referring to ANY time the engine is at 2000 rpm - meaning in Park, when you are just goosing the throttle, or in gear when you are accelerating, or at highway speed in high gear? If you are experiencing a "shuddering" in the engine at certain speeds/rpms - especially if these are speeds you regularly cruise at (long commutes at steady speeds), the problem could be in the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). They have a tendency to wear unevenly if you drive a certain steady speeds. Eventually, the problem would progress to an engine code, but it may occur without setting the check engine light.

I have a 2008 mercury Milan with nearly 60k miles on it. When I come to a stop the rpm drops by 1000 then recovers quickly. What should I do to fix the problem? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Engine cuts out and sputters at 4000 rpm. sometimes hard starting. Quad 4


cutting out and sputtering at 4000 rpms are normal, its the rev limiter kicking in, all of them do it, as far as hard starting, is it just sense its been cold?? might want to put some fuel stabilizer in it.

could be a number of things. timing may be off. timing chain could have jumped but then you would have lack of power and backfire. could have a vacuum leak. throttle body have carbon buildup around the butterfly valves? Valve problems. compression problems. many things. Hope its nothing major I know I am not being much help but those are some things to look at.

My 1992 achieva is dying because the rpm went to zero and the guage will flicker around while in driving.It sputters around like it is not making a connection


there could be many reasons for this but when the rpm needle went down,did the car died out? if is just doing that you may have problems with an electical conection,fuel pump or relays,have the car check for this systems.
have you had any work done on it recently?

good chance one of your fuel injectors is fouled or not working, it will also cause computer not to lock torq converter. usual culpret is cyliner #6

91 Toyota 22re sputters around 2500rpms


your throttle position sensor might me bad or out of adjustment. if it is out of adjustment then it can misfire all the way up to 3500 rpm.
i had a friend that had a miss fire at 2500 rpm. i adjusted the tpss right and the misfire went away. Check for engine codes by jumping TE1 and E1.
Your fuel filter may be dirty and restricting fuel to your injectors.
have your fuel pressure checked.

I had a similar problem with my 92 (same as yours). Does the tachometer jump around wildly when this happens ? Mine did until I found an intermittently grounded wire between the A/C plug and the tach input to the computer. Tough problem for you. Was easier for me because someone had placed a jumper wire on outside of the harness and that was the one with the short. I cut it and the problem stopped. Not sure on yours but sounds just like the problem I had.
