Stay inside the truck, and close all the doors. Light stays on right? Put your key in the ignition. Does the chime start going off when you put the key in? If so, door switch or the GEM thinks a door is open.

To find out which door... Leave the key in the ingntion. Turn to the on position. Even with doors closed, chime sounds once after a few seconds and door ajar light comes on and stays on right? Open each door one by one. The chime should sound each time you open a door. When you find the door that doesn't make the chime sound when you open it, that is the problem. (Don't forget to try the rear hatch and the hatch glass also!) To determine if the switch is bad or if the GEM is having a problem thinking the door is open, just unplug the suspected switch, close all the doors, and see if the problem stops. (don't forget to wait a second to give the lights time to go off) If unplugging the switch solves it, the replace it. If it doesn't, Ford can check your GEM to see if it is the problem.

Accessing a switch: The switch is located in the latch assembly. Try sprayiny a lubricant (WD-40) or cleaner (carb cleaner) into the latch assembly and open/shut the door several times. This should loosen the dirt build up. The hatch adjar switch should also be located at the latch and again try doing the same thing to it.

Sensors: The sensors are in the door latches.

Buzzer location: Under the driver side dash, search for a bright orange 'solinoid' like deviceroughly 2 inches long and 1 inch around (it maybe about one inch square). Look while the alarm is sounding. Unplug the alarm. Tape the ends of the exposed wires.

    Also, I find this information... about Vehicle Errors (Aug 2009)... the electric windows do not operate, and the
    interior lights remain illuminated causing the battery to drain. The
    door-ajar light on the dash remains lighted even though all doors are
    shut. The ABS light on the dash remains illuminated even though the
    breaks have recently been changed, and the electric locks, while seeming
    to function normally, have, on occasion, self-engaged. The sporadic
    locking occurs seldom, and I have not seen this malfunction for some
    time now. One last symptom is the washer option of the windshield-wipers
    has frequently been stubborn – this also has not been a problem I've
    seen lately.

    Electric Windows – Symptoms.
    - Driver's side,
    electric window will not move up or down unless the window-switch is
    rocked vigorously back and forth (I have been able to lower and raise
    the window fully by rocking the switch).
    - Power to the electric
    window on the passenger's side shows low voltage; apparently there is
    insufficient electrical power to engage the motor. Both motors, when
    tested, perform the same on the driver's side; two additional motors
    were also tested on the Driver's side window and have displayed the same
    behavior. None of the motors work on the passenger's side. I have
    determined the problem is not the window motors.
    - Apparently,
    the 1995 Ford Windstars have a limit-switch and regulator inside the
    door panel that sometimes causes the windows not to roll down. This may
    be one of the problems on the passenger's side, but we have eliminated
    this as the problem on the driver's side.

    Interior lights stay on - Symptoms.

    - Cleaning the door ajar switches is a good place to start. There is
    obviously a switch located in both the driver and the passenger doors.
    Open the door and clean the latch mechanism -- a screw driver can be
    used to lock the latch and use an air compressor to blow air through for
    cleaning, and then use WD40 or liquid wrench spraying inside the latch.
    Release the latch and close and open the door a few times. For the side
    sliding door -- open the latch, repeating the same procedure as above.
    The back door -- there are two ajar switches in the rear which require
    the same maintenance.
    - Broken wires may be causing a short.
    There is a cluster of wires that go from the cabin, through a rubber
    grommet, to the door. This would be more obvious if by opening the door,
    the locks go crazy. This could mean that the wires in that grommet are
    bad and need to be replaced (I have not seen this happen in my van). You
    can cut the rubber grommet from the bottom (that way water is less
    likely to enter from the top). Look for any burnt or broken wires and to
    the needed Repair.


    - NOTE: The GEM module is responsible for the
    following: Door Ajar & Low Washer Fluid warning light, Remote
    Keyless Entry & Power Door Locks, Power Windows, Courtesy Lamps, all
    the Door Ajar Switches, including the Lift Gate, Interval
    Wipers/Washer, Heated Mirrors & Rear Window Defrost, Rear Air
    Suspension, Warning Chimes and also ties in a bit with the ABS & Air
    Bag System, as well as other minor components. The G.E.M. is located
    under the dash behind the fuse panel. On my electrical diagram from the
    Ford dealership, the part # is 14B205.

    This is a process of elimination. I believe that it is the GEM module, but checking the other possibilities is a good process.

Your best bet would be to find a Tech like this guy , with the right diagnostic equiment . Door Locks Go Crazy 1 Unless you know how to do automotive electrical testing . Your door ajar switch is a input to a body control module . or GEM as ford calls thiers .

Where is the body control module located on a 2002 Ford explorer XLT


It's called a GEM - generic electronic module .It is located behind center of the instrument panel .
SECTION 419-10: Multifunction Electronic Modules 2000 Explorer/Mountaineer Workshop Manual REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Procedure revision date: 10/07/2004 Module - Generic Electronic (GEM)/Central Timer (CTM) Removal
  1. CAUTION: Electronic modules are sensitive to static electrical charges. If exposed to these charges, damage may result. Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to Section 501-20B .
  1. Remove the audio unit. For additional information, refer to Section 415-01 .
  1. Remove the center instrument panel finish panel.
    1. Remove the screws.

    • Disconnect the electrical connectors.

Yes you can and if that GEM module doesnt work the 4X4 will flash or if you dont have the 4x4 your door lock controls wont operate

Did you an your auto electrican check power an grounds for the GEM ? Voltage drop testing ? . Did you check power an ground circuits for the affected systems . Working when they want sounds more like a loose connection somewhere .

Relay for 2002 Ford explorer xlt power Windows dome lights radio dont work


I just had the same problem with my 2002 Ford Explorer XLT. I checked all of the fuses in the passenger compartment, #6 under the hood, and was about to get ready to pull the GEM and decided to check ALL if the fuses under the hood. I have found no posts referring to any other fuses but my problem turned out to be the #15 15A Memory (KAPWR) fuse. I replaced it and all is good. Like always, rule out the little things first before spending too much time or money on major repairs.
