That, or the cooling fans are not working, replace the thermostat is cheaper.

Does the car heat up when going over 40 MPH or when stopped ?

I have 2000 dodge intrepid no heat I put antifreeze in resivoir works for a little bit park car drive again no heat again, temp reads at half mark I park car antifreeze is coming out over flow hose

Sounds like a bad thermostat. If the thermostat is not working, the system doesn't know the real temp of the engine and things like the antifreeze and heating system work wrong or don't work at all. Take it to a mechanic to check things out.

Overheating

You have a head gasket problem with the engine generating abnormal pressure, and sending all the antifreeze to the reservoir, thereby leaving the engine running dry; it is dangerous for the water pump to operate with no water.
Drill 3 11/64 or 3/16" holes in the thermostat side facing the engine, making sure not to touch the opening mechanism; this will keep antifreeze always running thereby, compensating for the abnormal pressure regenated by head gasket leak(s).
Your thermostat was never your problem.
In cold weather, 5 degress celsius or under, the thermostat takes longer to open and more antifreeze will be sent to the reservoir leading to an overheating.. Partially cover the radiator with a sheet metal piece to make the thermostat open faster and stay open, as the antifreeze is not being cold that much by cold air. You're fooling the cooling system into warm weather driving.
Don't waste your money buying radiator stop leak or liquids to repair head gaskets; this will only corrode and make your radiator to eventually leak.

Antifreeze light says system is low and car runs hot but antifreeze level is where it should be

Sounds like it could be a thermostat not opening. If the thermostat doesn't open then it will get hot because its not allowing the cooled antifreeze from the radiator into the engine. Your car has two circulations with the antifreeze. While your car is running it is heating up the antifreeze in the engine and when it reaches a certain temperature the thermostat opens and takes the hot antifreeze from the engine and puts it into the radiator to be cooled. At the same time the cool antifreeze from the radiator is placed into the engine to keep it cool. If your thermostat doesn't open your engine will get hot and overheat.

Over heating and trouble idleing

Could be faulty Thermostat/ Leaky head gasket or bad water pump.. Check the oil pan for any antifreeze,if its OK the do a compression test on the cylinders to check the head gasket, and replace the Thermostat if its defective. and check for any antifreeze leaks on the ground. Good luck bro

Does the thermostat effect the heating on a car

yes The heat is transfered from the hot antifreeze and if the thermastat is stuck open the antifreeze won't get hot enough.

Ok my car keeps over heating and i keep putting water into it only last bout 15 miles then overheats again and the water is disapearing i have a mazda mx6

Never put straight water in this will crack your heads. You should be putting the required antifreeze in you can buy the 50/50 mixed antifreeze for your car but find out if you take the old green or the new orange antifreeze. Also if your car is over heating then it might need a new thermostat or you have a leak in a hose that has rotted or your radiator is plugged up which it shouldn't if your car, has been cared for. The thermostat is around $10 at any auto parts store you can have them help you find the right one. And the thermostat is located in the main radiator hose that connects to the throttle body.

What causes oil to get in antifreeze

Driving the truck without a thermostat won't necessarily hurt the engine. It will take longer to get heat and it will be sporadic because the coolant is always circulating. Oil in antifreeze could come from 2 places, transmission cooler in rad if you have an automatic. The lines inside will occasionally start leaking. The other is from the engine, usually a head gasket leaking. My suspicion is that you have a leaking head gasket. This would explain the over heating with oil in the coolant. Take it in and get a pressure test on the rad or a compression test on the engine. This should confirm or eliminate the head gasket. Hope this helps.
