Does this occur when turning? Typically a Universal Joint will make such a sound when accelerating while turning.

If this helps, please rate highly

Take it to another dealer for a diagnosis. Dont tell them what the first dealer said. Mention your concern about the timing chain/belt and make sure they write this concern on the work order. This way you have it documented before your warranty expires.
I can not offer a diagnosis aa you have not provided enough info. Eg what car/truck/van.
If you only hear this when cold, it could be valve adjustment, how does the engine run when cold compared to warm. How abot in winter is the sound worse

There was a thumpiing noise in the engine, something popped and now it wont start.

either you have a snapped timing belt or snapped valve.
Do attempt to turn engine via crankshaft pulley bolt. if there is no turn then you have to remove the timing cover and see what is the timing belt condition,

Do you happen to have plastic rim covers? An auto mechanic suggested that these can rub or oscillate in just the right way to make you think you have a permanent rock stuck in your tire treads. It drove me nuts! But sure enough, I removed the rim coves and there was no noise at all. I ended up putting the same ones back on again with double-sided tape (double layered) along the inside rim of the covers and this stopped the noise for some time. Alas, one winter later, I'm hearing noises again. I've pulled them off again this week, but with my black rims underneath, the van looks like some undercover cop car!

Popping noise when turning is usually CV joints. Is this a 4wd? One more thing to check, is your sway bar bolts, as they can break off, or wear grooves on them, and pop as they have pressure put on them. If the popping noise is something that happens once, and not a continuous thing when you're turning, most of the time it's ball joints though. Did you replace them? How did you check them? Easy way to tell, is to jack the wheel up, and if it slides out slightly when it gets ready to clear the pavement, then you're almost certain it is ball joints.

2002 T&C 3.8, 4 speed auto heavy clutch or brake smell

1st thing to check is when you put in gear when cold and again when hot Take off fast ,,the noise if there igoes up and down with the speed and rpm ,,the noise you can hear mostly is the pump in side the gear box is not pushing enough pressure to the Forward Band clutch which drives the car so it has to slip and that is what you can smell the clutch bands burning And the more you can smell it the worse its getting and soon will let you down in a place you dont want to be..
So get it checked out new or as soon as poss
The A/Con clutch also sounds like its worn out.

Engine Idle problems

You will need to clean the throttle valve and the idle speed control air-bypass valve, they get gunked up and cause this concern, spray allot of carb spray (1/2 can) through the intake throttle valve, have someone hold the idle up high enough so engine doesn't stall, this will most likely turn on the check eng lite so after you are done make sure to disconnect the battery for a few and then drive the van a few days so the computer can relearn the idle curve suited to your driving habits. Good luck, hope this helps, was a Ford tech for 20 years, did hundreds of these types of repairs for idle concerns, taurus was the worst.

I have a 1999 pontiac montana van with a v6 how long does the timing belt last the van has 100,000 miles should I be concerned about the timing belt?

HI.....
On your PONTIAC MONTANA,
You don;t have to WORRY about the timing belt.
Because your have use a TIMING CHAIN.
And is suposed to be good for the life of the engine.
But you can replace, if you Know that is bad, making grinning noise,.
But DON'T for maintenance.
Is very small. that mean Hard to come damaged.

I hope this information work for you. and resolve your question.

Thank you for use fixya.

Rear noise coming from the back of my minivan

well usually this called detonation, also known as pinging. In most cars, this is caused by advanced timing or incorrect fuel octane. In your case, timing cannot be changed so going to a higher octane fuel will help. If you can find some, get some combustion chamber cleaner and add it to your gas. Sometimes, carbon deposits can cause pre-ignition/detonation
