Fuel gauge reads empty even after filling and light is on always full or empty? any ideas

The one common factor in most of these complaints is the fuel level sensor.
Late model fuel injected cars and trucks all have their fuel pumps located in the gas tank. There is also a fuel level sensor, or you may know it better as a 'sender'. It holds the float assembly along with a resistor board that has small little metal 'fingers' that touch the board and send the signal to the fuel gauge to display the proper amount of fuel in the tank. What happens when the fuel gauge becomes erratic is that the little metal 'fingers' start to deteriorate from fuel additives, corrosion and just plain bad gas.

Digital gas gauge reading incorrectly and inverted

sounds like a faulty sender unit or your just realy low on fuel before you spend any money on repairs try filling the tank up with fuel as if its been low for a long time the sender unit in the tank may be sticking the fuel will lube it and may start working again

Fuel gage showing half a tank but trip computer only registering 60 miles left

Its very simple. If the gauge is showing half full then fill the tank and see how much fuel it takes. If the amount you add is approximately 50 percent of the fuel tank capacity then you know the fuel gauge is accurate . In that case the computer is giving an inaccurate reading and should be ignored. All you need is an accurate fuel gauge - it does not matter a row of beans what the computer says if the fuel gauge is reading correctly.

Need to replace the sensor inside the gas tank. I have a 2008 Malibu with the same problem. It was a faulty fuel gauge sensor.

worth checking the fuel tank for holes or there might be some fuel delivery pipes leaking badly. Or it might be an O2 sensor not giving correct signal to ecu thus consuming so much fuel.

Gas gage went to empty and low gas light went on and low tire light

Put gas in your car and check your tire pressures. If your fuel gauge just "Jumped" suddenly to empty, you probably have a bad sending unit in the fuel tank.

Fuel gauge reads E when first started, jumps to F after awhile

It is more likely to be the fuel guage sender which is faulty.

I have a 1994 dodge ram 1500 slt. and the gas gage will not read the amount of gas in the gas tank and gas light stays on when I know the tank is full. leaving me wondering how much gas i run on sometimes....

The problem is with the sensor inside the gas tank since the method of indication used is by passing an electric current & the resistance to that current is a measure of level of liquid in the tank , i.e. the gauge consists of two parts:
  • The sensing unit
  • The indicator
The sensing unit usually uses a float connected to a potentiometer. As the tank empties, the float drops and slides a moving contact along the resistor, increasing its resistance. In addition, when the resistance is at a certain point, it will also turn on a "low fuel" light on some vehicles.
However if this float gets stuck to the bottom of the tank or a leak fills up the float making it sink to the bottom of the tank, thus always indicating 'E' for empty.........................sodeep

Fuel gauge broken on 2003 Audi A4

You have a fuel gauge sending unit problem, the gauge is not the problem, the sending unit is in the gas tank, u must remove the gas tank to replace it.
