Question about 1991 Plymouth Sundance

1 Answer

I boost the battery, and it does hold a charge but only for a day or a day and a half at most. I'm not sure what could be causing this problem. The battery was purchased Last year brand new, but sat all winter long with no use what so ever.

If the battery holds the charge for a day or 2 wile you drive the car normally then you should check your alternator live the car 2 or 3 days after the battery was charged and check if it starts and run if it does run it another 2 or 3 days and see if the battery dies if it dies most likely your alternator is bad, your mechanic can test it with in 3 minutes to see if it is the alternator or the battery

1996 lexus es300 not holding charge

Make sure the battery is good. U can charge it and disconnect it from car overnight and see if it works the next day. If it is still fine then the car has a drain. If no good, then the battery is bogus and cannot hold a charge.

U have something in wiring that is draining the battery after shutdown. Need an ammeter. Hook it up to the battery and wait about a half hour. Then notice draw on meter. Start removing fuses until you locate the line that is responsible for the draw. Then check out each and every item on that trunk line.

Battery was boosted, resulting in loss of power locks and drivers power window, no prior problems

the jumpstart caused a power spike which blew one or several relays or fuses. remember there is a fuse panel inside AND underhood.

Battery might have died cause the altinator is not charging 14+V Please charge the battery, donot boost the dead battery. After charging the battery check the altinator output.

Battery not holding charge.Booster charged battery and let run for half an hour.Next day battery still charged;however,on third day no juice at battery.Battery light does not come on well car is running,so...

Anything is possible, The correct (and easy) way to find out is to FULLY charge your battery. Check charging voltage at ~ 2000 rpm, you should have 13,8 to 14.8 volts at the battery, if not, investigate why not. (you would not get a high enough voltage reading with a discharded battery).

Try disconnecting the negative cable (car off first!!!!!! or kill diodes)at night and see if you can retain a charge. measure voltage on the battery at night and again in the morning, before hooking back up... any lower voltage is a bad mark against the battery. If battery retains a charge, test for voltage draws:hook a volt meter in series with the negative terinal, and the battery cable. more than .2 volts may be too much draw. Pull fuses and see if the issue stops. Most sommon issue is diodes in the alternator. One or more fail and cause battery drain.

Batterys that go totally dead, or have water level go lower than the plates often do not recover.

1988 Chev half ton kills battery. Put in new battery and starts right away. Ran it for about 20min then shut it off. Tried to restart and battery is completely dead. Needs boost to restart.

Have your starting system checked for starter draw.If the starter is drawing to many amps it will draw the battery down very quickly. Also have your charging system load tested to make sure the alternator is charging properly.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Car starts when boosted but wont start by itself after tuning it off. Is it the battery or alternator?

It could be either. The alternator feeds electrical charge to the battery. Easiest way to tell is spend the 100 bucks and replace the battery. Even if your alternator is good, some batteries will not hold a charge even when boosted.

If that doesn't work try to get a used or rebuilt alternator.
Personally I would take it to a shop and have them check it first. You could have a solenoid issue and your battery and alternator are fine.
There could aslo be an electrical short in the wiring harness that is causing a draw on your battery.

Was driving home it was 35 below had to boost car be for i left work drove 30 miles when the car just quit next day charged battey full charge but it will not stay charged is it the alternator or the...

It's a possible combination of both. A bad battery won't ever hold a charge and a drive of 30 miles should have charged the battery sufficiently to start the next day. Since the car would run once jumped, the alternator appears to be doing it's job but without having it tested (most auto parts chains will perform this test free of charge) it's impossible to tell whether it's putting out enough amperage to adequately to charge the battery.
