Question about 1988 Dodge Shadow

1 Answer

I Have a 1988 Dodge 4 Cyl 2.2 no turbo Shadow and it seems to stall out on me after driving it about 15 to 20 minutes and then if i try to start it up,it won't start unless i let it sit for a couple of hours the it starts up and drives with no problrems till it stalls agin after about 20 minutes i'm thinking it's the coil?? the mechanic said he replaced the fuel pump then the same thing happened again , now he say's it's the computer ? personally i don't think he knows what he's doing other than just changing parts. I think the problem is either in the coil or in the distributer because it seems to drive fine with no engine miss for about 20 minutes then it stalls and have to wait a couple of hours then it starts up with no problems.

This sounds like the electronics warming up.

The behavior of transistors varies greatly with temperature. The circuitry around them is designed to compensate for that, so that the behavior of the entire circuit is reasonably stable over the range of temperatures it is expected to encounter in normal operation.

As transistors age, their behavior can shift such that, when they are either quite warm, or quite cold, their parameters are too far off for the circuitry to effectively compensate.

The most frequent result of this in cars is for the device with the faltering components in it to fail completely at some point during the warm up phase, which, of course, is what you are experiencing.

If there is a separate electronic device that is responsible for the ignition (like the ignition module inside the distributor of a GM HEI ignition), I would suspect that first, followed by the engine's Electronic Control Module.

I have 5 dodge turbos. Have had the issue a few times. Try the pick up plate - in the distributior under the rotor. A faulty one can cause all kinds of issues : no or hard starting, misfiring, symptoms of a vacuum leak, rough idle. I carry a spare one on me.

Maybe 80 dollars, easy to change.

Trouble shooting by just replacing parts is expensive, and unnecessary.

You are having a 100% failure. If the pickup plate is the cause, then, while it won't start the signal from the pickup plate, under testing, will be clearly absent. If there is a signal, then that is not the problem.

The TCC solenoid in the transmission needs to be replaced. It is under the side cover. It controls the converter to lock up for better fuel mileage. If you want to drive car until you get it fixed you can un-plug the connector going to the transmission on the front of transmission. This will keep it from going to lock up mode and keep it from stalling until you can fix it. Common problem.

I would look for spark, you may have an ignition problem. it would be a sensor that goes into your distributor, the plug should be a round one with i believe 4 wires.

1.Start by changing plugs and wires. 2.Check for vacuum leaks. With the engine running, wigglr every hose you can see, to make sure nothing is loose or cracked. 3.Change fuel filter. 4.Check timing. 5.Check air control valve. 6.Check idle control sensor.
