It should be a serpentine belt that gets all the accessories on the motor replace it and start the car. before you replace the belt make sure that all the pulleys are free and not bend or broken

yes ideas.your altenator may be bad,or the belts broken to the altenator. look for yourself to see.if the belts are all on,then charge your battery and take your car to an autozone or advance auto parts store and they will check both battery and the altenator for free. if both check good, which it sounds like a bad altenator to me.they will charge your battery for free also, which then, you'll have enough power on the battery to drive back home,or a close repair facility. they will not[autozone or advance auto parts] replace, remove your altenator, but they can check it while it's still on the car.if it turns up bad, they can charge your battery fully, which with no headlights on,you can drive about 25miles with your battery FULLY charged.thank you for choosing fixya.com

I have a 1988 pontiac fire bird and i took it a part to rebuild it and have it all back together and lost the belt route a possibly a pulley but can't figure out what one is missin if there is one missing...

It sounds like you are missing the idler pully. I need to know what size motor you have to get you the diagram. If this car is a v belt style you manually set tension. If this is serpentine belt style sound like your missing the tensioner too.

Missing belt.

Belts drive the power steering, alternator, air conditioner, & possibly the water pump. If the battery light is on then it is the alternator belt. If it is hard to steer it is the P/S belt. If the A/C does not cool it is the A/C belt. Lastly if it overheats it is the water pump belt. Normally one belt will drive two of these components. A serpentine belt will drive them all.

GET LOND DRIVE 3/8 RACHET OR BELT TOOL AND PLACE ON THE BELT TENSIONER AND PUSH THE TENSIONER YOU WILL SEE BELT IS LOOSEN REMOVE THE BELT FROM THE ALTENATOR PULLEY AND LET THE TENSIONER GO SLOWY AND REMOVE THE COMPLETE BELT. COMPARE THE OLD BELT FOR SIZE AND MAKE SURE THEY ARE EXACT MATCH. YOU HAVE BELT SCHEMATIC TOP OF THE WATER PUMP START FROM THE BOTTOM CRANK PULLEY PLACE THE BELT AND MAKE SURE DONT MISS TEETH OUT OR INSIDE. A/C PULLEY WATER PUMP POWER STEERING IDLE PULLEY AND OTHER SIDE PLACE ON TENSIONER PULLEY TO AND PUSH THE TENSIONER AGAIN AND PLACE THE ALTENATOR PULLEY AND YOU ARE DONE. BEFORE START TO ENGINE FALLOW THE COMPLETE BELT FOR PERFECT SIT AND CORRECT POSITION.SHOULDNT BE TOO TIGHT OR TOO LOOSE.

Check charging system and battery light on

Your altenator is not working. Or the altenator belt is broken.

I replaced my altenator a week ago. Now my power

There are several possibilities.
1. power steering pump locked up or locking up (extremely low fluid could cause this)
2. a random pully could have locked up and caused the belt to break, resulting in a loss of power steering.

Hope this helps
