Question about 1997 Cadillac Eldorado

1 Answer

Can a home mechanic easily change a 1997 Eldorado's spark plugs and wires? Is there anything I need to know - good/bad, hints, etc?; any advice please. I was told this is too difficult to do with "Northstar Engines" ?? I only have experience with Fords & Chevs with simple systems.

What causes mis firing on opel astra estate 160i 1997 models

It could be anything from a bad spark plug wire, bad coil, bad valve, bad fuel injector, vacuum leak, or other electrical or mechanical issue. Have you done anything to attempt to fix the issue such as performing a tune up, checking the compression on the misfiring cylinder, or swapping spark plugs or spark plug wires between cylinders to see what the misfire follows?

What do I need to do to change spark plugs and wires on 1997 mountaineer

Spark plug wires just pull off and press back on. Make sure you grasp the wires by the rubber boot only. If you pull the wires by the wires, instead of using the boot, you can break the wires. Remove the plugs with a 3/8" ratchet, extension and a spark plug socket. I do not know if you have to remove anything to get access to the spark plugs and spark plug wires. You may need a universal joint to angle the ratchet.

The Motor is missing, more at low idle

There are LOTS of possibilities, the most common ones are ignition related. Without knowing more about what engine and ignition system you have, I can only give you generic advice. Look for ignition wires that have a white mark on them where they touch metal--that indicates arcing to ground. If arcing has become really bad, you can actually see the spark at night! Pull the wires from the spark plugs and look for build up in the connector which will prevent good conduction. Some systems have individual coils for each cylinder, though I doubt your vehicle does. In that case, though, individual coils can go bad.

When was the last time you had a tune-up? When spark plugs get old and worn, when the coil, cap and rotor (if so equipped) become worn, and when wires get old, the ignition spark intended for the spark plugs can end up just going to ground, which is what cause that "miss" you describe.

If you are not mechanically inclined, I would just check the plug wire routing as described above and see when your last tune-up was. If it has been a year or more since a tune-up and you can't see anything obvious, any competent mechanic can diagnose your problem more quickly than can you.

I had my old catalytic converter turn red and was told by a work mechanic that I needed a new one. So I had a new one professionally installed. I have changed the spark plugs, spark plug wires. PCV valve,...

engine is running rich. Some reasons might be MAF sensor or computer. Is the engine light still on, or what are the codes you got from the previous scans?

Misfire on cylinder 1

Here is advice and direction in one -

First take off the spark plug wire and switch it with another one if - IF it will fit- - one of the others should work - then see if the miss goes away. If yes of course change the plug wire [s]

If it continues to misfire - pull the plug and change it out - for 2 dollars you will know at least if the plug is good.

If this doesn't work - you most likely have a burnt valve or a head gasket that is bad between cylinders.

97 cadillac eldorado will not turn over. had a bad battery and 2 cut spark plug wires but the car would start with a jump. replaced battery and all spark plugs, wires and air filter. now car will not turn...

Have you tested the new battery? Would not be the first bad battery I have seen come off the shelf. If the battery tests good check your battery cables.

#2 clyinder not firing in a 02 eldorado with 19000 miles on the car

There are several possibilities.
Based on the year (2002) and low miles (19,000) it probably has the original Plugs, Wires and Coil. Rubber insulation on Wires does dry rot over a period of time. Spark Plugs should be changed about every 3 to 4 years regardless of miles. Wires should be replaced every other Spark Plug change. Translated you should be on you 3rd set of Spark Plugs and 2nd set of wires.
When working in the engine compartment and with the electrical system remember: ther is 40,000 to 75,000 volts present. Bad Wires could mean an electrical shock!
You can cheaply purchase Ignition (Spark Plug/Wire/Coil) Test Kits at most auto parts stores or even at Harbor Freight.
1) Remove the #2 Wire connection to the #2 Coil position.
2) Insert the tester into the #2 Coil position. Clipping the other end onto the engine block or onto a good ground.
3) Start the Engine.
4) You will be looking for a good strong (blue) and rhythmic spark. If it is not strong (yellow or orange) nor rhythmic, the Coil is malfunctioning and should be replaced.
5) If it is a good rhythmic spark, Turn OFF the Engine.
6) Disconnect the Tester and reconnect the #2 Wire to the #2 Coil position.
7) Disconnect the #2 Wire from the #2 Spark Plug.
8) Connect the Tester into the end of the #2 Wire. Clipping the other end to the engine block or a good ground.
9) Start the Engine.
10) Again you are looking for a strong (blue) and rhythmic spark. If is not strong (yellow or orage) and rhythmic, the Wire is bad and should be replaced. Wires should always be changed as a Set is the standard rule.
11) If it is a good rhythmic spark, Turn OFF the Engine.
12) Remove the #2 Spark Plug out of the engine.
13) Check the Igntion end of the Plug for carbon, dirt, or being fouled. Check the Gap.
14) Insert the #2 Spark Plug back into the #2 Wire.
15) Using the Spark Plug Tester. Connect the Tester to the #2 and clip the other end to the engine block or a good ground.
16) Start the Engine.
17) Once again you should be checking for a strong (blue) and rhythmic spark. If it is not strong (yellow or orange) nor rhythmic, the Spark Plug could be malfunctioning.
18) Clean the #2 Spark Plug.
19) Regap the #2 Spark Plug.
20) Retest the Spark Plug.
21) If there is now a strong (blue) and rhythmic spark, then the #2 Spark Plug is now good.
22) If there is not a strong (yellow or orange) nor rhythmic spark the #2 Spark Plug is malfunctioning and needs to be replaced. Again the standard rule is to replace the Spark Plugs as a set.

The several other possibilities relate to sensors. However without additional error codes or the check engine light on, we will assume that the problem can be solved with the solution above.

Car wont start, sounds like out of gas but tank is full

A car not starting can be caused by many, many things.........but...................a bad thermostat or a good thermostat will not cause or keep a car from starting in any way. you need to know if it is getting gas to the cylinders........and to check for spark at the cylinders.......pull a spark plug wire at the spark plug, pull the spark plug and see if it looks wet or smells like strong gas odor....then plug wire onto spark plug, (without re-installing spark plug), and hold spark plug onto a grounded metal object on engine (using a rubber insulated object, so you don't get shocked), then have someone turn engine over and look to see if spark plug sparks........if yes, re-install spark plug, etc.......your ignintion is sparking, but if you are getting fuel, it may be a jumped timing chain? You may need mechanical help........don't trust the person that told you about a thermostat........

Replacing electric seats from a 1995 model into a 1997 facelift.

Technically, you can put any seat in any vehicle, as long as it dosen't interfere with anything. (door closing etc) As far as I know, most jeep seats interchange easily, At worst, you may need to drill a hole or two. Important part is before you begin, identify each wire in the harness, making sure that you know which one does what so if the harnesses don't match you can easily switch wires around. Write it down. Don't try to remember if you do great but if you forget, you can burn stuff out!!! If you need to cut wires, don't twist and tape...twist, solder then tape.
Good luck

1997 Plymouth Breeze won't start...has no spark

pretty har to say at this point, help me by telling what u checked and how u checked it. What engine is in the car?

The no spark issue could be any of the following: distributor, dist. cap, rotor, plug wires, spark plugs and engine coil.
Check the engine coil to make sure it isn't cracked, u can easily find it by following the center plug wire from the distributor cap.
I am not the most familiar with chrysler products myself, though i used to be a mechanic. I will look into this for you, but until i find a more precise answer, i am inclined to say it is the engine coil. I will get back to u very soon.
How did this problem occur? Did u come home one night and then car never restarted or did it stall somewhere as u were driving?
What i'm really interested in is knowing how you checked the engine spark.
