When I go to turn my 2001 Ford Escort on, it doesn't start right away. It doesn't just do it in the morning when the engine is cold, it does it all the time. Usually it takes 2 or 3 times before it will actually start. The check engine light is not on. It runs fine after it starts up. I have always done the routine maintenance on it (oil changes every 3 months) and the spark plugs have been changed within the last few months. The vehicle has over 113,000 miles on it.

First scan the PCM for trouble codes using a hand held engine scanner, Then repair codes by replacing failed sensor as needed. If no codes are present check fuel pump pressure at the time of failure, replace as needed.

Check for fuel pressure while cranking the engine over. If there is no pressure the fuel pump is damaged caused by running our of gas. Spund like a fuel pump problem.

Just to clarify; The engine cranks over when engaging the starter, but the engine takes a while to actually start up and run? Check engine light on? How does the vehicle run after it finally starts? When was the last time maintence was performed? Miles on the vehcile? Sorry for all the questions, but this info will help me a lot. Thanks.

Everytime the key is turned on at certain intervals, the PCM powers up the fuel pump to proper pressure. I would verify the fuel pressure with a gauge during start up and would also leave the gauge connected and watch for a slow pressure drop. Do not replace any parts unless it is certainly the cause. After this procedure is complete, we can move on with more basic diagnostic procedures for a solution.

2000 ford escort zx2 quit running on the wife this morning still has electric\r\npower starter sounds like it turns but it will not start dont sound like ti turns motor over never heard of a start problem...

Pull the upper timing belt cover, just some 8mm bolts, and verify the if the engine is turning or not. If the timing belt breaks it will sound like the engine is spinning faster with the starter than normal. The great thing is that these engines are non interference and will not suffer valve damage if the belt breaks. If the engine is not turning with the starter then you have a bad solenoid in the starter and it will have to be replaced. You can check my profile for information on how to do the timing belt yourself if it comes to that.

I have a 2001 ford escape 2.0L and i was having trouble of it turning over when the car was warm. If it was a cold start it would start right up. If i drove for a while then turned it off, it wouldnt start back up unless i let it sit for an hr or 2. But once started it would run fine

SOLUTION: I changed the fuel injectors $120 for parts. And now all the hot starting problems went away.

Hope this helps

The CCA;s(cold cranking amps) are too low on your battery. When this happens your car usually only starts when its cold. Recommend testing your battery and probably replacing it. Good luck, keep me posted.
