Question about 1993 Chevrolet C/K 2500

1 Answer

Vehicle engine was running fine when parked the day before. When I tried to start it the next day, the engine would not even turn over, but guages move and headlights are bright! What's the most likely cause of it's "sudden death"? A fuse? A relay? A ground wire?

Take a rod and hammer and tap on the side of the starter and see if that will free up the starter.... If you want to check this further you will need to check to make sure that you have Batt. voltage to the starter in the first place, then the purple wire should have voltage only when the key its turned to the star possition. If this is all ok then you have a bad starter that needs replaced. if the purple wire is dead then you will need to look towards the ignition most likly the ignition cylinder in the steering colum.

My 2003 Buick Regal wouldn't start on a very cold day. I came back the next day and decided to shift it out of park and back into park and it started right up. What could cause that to happen? 3800 engine

When you said "it wouldn't start" did it turn over (starter cranking the engine) or did it act like the battery was dead and wouldn't crank, even though all the dash lights lit up?

If it simply didn't crank over but then by you shifting it out of park, then back into park, may indicate a park/neutral switch problem.

It may have been something as simple as the shifter, when the vehicle was last parked, didn't fully engage the park/neutral switch into the park position. BUT by you moving the shifter out and back into park it engaged the switch.

Cold weather can do some strange things sometimes when it comes to mechanical devices. IF it acts up again, simply try the "trick" that worked the last time.

It may just be temperature related and may not give any more problems once the weather warms up.

Hope this helps.

I had the car in storage for 35 days. Upon startup, battery was dead. I took the dead battery out(only 1 year old) and put in a good battery which started the car, while the car was running good I took out...

You recycle the old dead battery

Have no idea why you even put that back in

Common sense & your friend is correct

You don't disconnect anything on today's
vehicles, even with the key on

Put in a new battery, start the car, warm it up
& drive it for awhile & maybe you will get lucky
& it will complete some of the drive cycles & run some
monitors ,you know nothing about & it will be fine

If not, your mechanic friend should be about to stop
by with the bosses scan tool & help you out

Well, if it is doing all of that, the Check Engine light has GOT to be SCREAMING at you! Continuing to try to force the vehicle to operate under such conditions will only cause further damage to the vehicle. I would recommend getting the thing to where you can scan your onboard computer and find out what is going on.

could be one of two problems ,firstly the battery has a cell on the way out ,or the voltage regulator ,i would plump for the battery first by doing a heavy duty drop test and see if a cell gasses up .or put another battery on from another vehicle and see what happens ,if its still teh same renew the regulator

Guages went dead, tranny not shifting from 3rd gear

Your transmission appears to be in "Limp Home" mode. This usually indicates an internal transmission problem that the computer has decided is too serious to allow regular operation. EVERYTHING, even your windshield wipers, has to get permission from your computer to operate. When the computer interferes with your operation of the vehicle, it sometimes gets overzealous and does other, more funky and entertaining things than it actually needs to do to protect or disable the vehicle.
The next place you need to go to in this vehicle is a transmission repair facility, attached to a tow-truck. They will confirm/eliminate the transmission as the problem. There are other things it could be, but it's telling you "transmission" and you need to have that confirmed/eliminated first, because it is almost always the most destructive and expensive fault a vehicle can develop. Don't drive it again, because it's cheaper to repair a transmission that has not grenaded.

Car won't start not the battery

Test the neutral safety switch but doing the following steps.

1)foot on brake
2)turn key to on position
3)shift lever to neutral (N)
4)start the engine
5)shift the lever to Park (P)

If the engine can start at N and not at park then it's the neutral safety switch.
