How do I check the gearbox oil level?

From underneath the vehicle. There is a drain plug at the bottom and a level/filler plug part way up the side. You remove the plug of the side with a hex wrench and top up until it starts to overflow. The bottles come with a plastic tube.

Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) checking:
1. Requirements for check:

1.2. Transmission must not be in fail-safe mode.
1.3. Shift lever in "P" position, parking brake applied.
1.4. Engine idling.
1.5. Air Conditioner and heater OFF.
1.6. ATF temperature must not exceed 104 Fahrenheit degree (40 Celsius degree) at start of test.
1.7. Only ATF with designation ESSO LT 71 141 may be used. Do not use any lubricant additives.
1.8. Automatic Transmission Fluid ATF - part number: G 052 162 A2 (1 liter wrapping)
1.9. An ATF level check when transmission oil temperature is too low results in overfilling, when too high results in underfilling.
2. CAUTION: Too much or too little ATF will affect the operation of the transmission. The ATF level must be checked at regular intervals.
3. The oil level is correct if a slight amount of oil runs out when ATF temperature is between 86 Fahrenheit degree (30 Celsius degree) and 113 F deg (45 C deg) (caused by increase of oil level when heated). For warmer climates, 122 F deg (50 C deg).
4. Hang filled ATF reservoir VAG 1924 as high as possible.
5. Shift lever in "P" position, engine running at idle.
6. Place oil drip pan under transmission oil pan.
7. Remove ATF filler plug (at the bottom of the automatic gearbox you will find 2 threaded plugs on below surface. First (in front of the car) is for emptying, and second is for filling up.

9. If necessary drain or top off ATF to attain correct oil level. Top ATF with filler hook from VAG 1924 ATF reservoir. Insert VAG 1924 (tool) ATF reservoir filler hook into filler hole and top off until a slight amount of oil flows from filler hole.
NOTE: Fit filler hook into one of the oil deflector cap slots placed on the filler opening.
CAUTION: Do not press filler hook upward or oil deflector cap can be pushed off.
10. Reinstall ATF filler plug. Tightening torque is 24 Nm.

Would like to know where the top up plug for my gear oil is and if there is a dip stick manual proton savvy bt 2006

Manual Transmissions don't have dip sticks.

2. Manual gearboxes have a drain and filler plug. The filler plug is usually found in an accessible position on one side of the gearbox which has to be accessed from under the vehicle.

To top up the gearbox the car has to be perfectly level so if you need to add oil to the gearbox you ideally need to get the car up on a garage hoist/lift so you can both access the filler plug easily, remove it and pump in the fresh gear oil. The usual correct oil level on these gearboxes is level with the bottom section of the filler plug opening in the gearbox. However you should check with the proton service staff on the correct procedure for topping up the manual gearbox in your car.

How to add transmission fluid to manual Matrix

A manual gearbox ...
The filler plug will be on the side of the gearbox. You've got to crawl underneath your car...
Here's a couple of generic images:

The filler plug will either have a square recess (as in first image) or a splined recess (as in the 2nd image) .. it may even have a square peg or even an 8 sided recess (its for what's called an 'allen key' in the UK'.

Whatever type of filler plug is on your gearbox .. undo it and fill up with the correct oil until it 'runs out of the hole'

I cannot locate the drain and filler plug for the maunal transmission 5speed of '97 corolla. Can anyone help

Hi Geoffrey,

Corolla '97 manual transmission using bolt 10mm ( hex) as filler plug and bolt 24 mm ( shallow socket) as drain plug transmission oil. Both bolts located on engine side ( and are not on top or bottom of your engine).

They just located on engine behind your radiator and beside your battery ( lower side). It is easier to acess them from bottom of engine. Their are on your gearbox.

Manual transmission fluid how to check level

On most front wheel drive transaxles......including your vehicle......there is a filler plug (17mm i think) half way up the gearbox.....

You can gain access from the top of the gearbox, if not (due to fans etc) you may have to jack up on all fours to get level and height clearance underneath.

WHERE IS THE FILLER PLUG ON THE GEARBOX ON A 1998 PASSAT TDI PLEASE

Hi,

Just checking.... it is a manual gearbox?

You may need a special tool for the drain plug and a 17mm allen key for the filler (some use the special drain tool for the filler as well)

The drain plug is located under the diff housing.

The filler plug is located on the left (nearside) off the gearbox (look to the left of the hole and you can see the 17mm hex filler bung).

Check you can undo the filler bung, then drain the gearbox oil.

Refit drain bung and fill gearbox through filler/level ********* until gearbox oil is up to the level of the filler bung.

Refit, test drive, check for leaks and retest level again when cold.

Cheers,

"If this has helped you in any way, please rate this solution" :-)
