Are you referring to the gas pump at the station? If so retract the pump nozzle about an inch then start filling. My Pathfinder has the exact same problem if I jam the nozzle in all the way.

Can't put gas in my 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix

I doubt it.
Usually the problem is a blockage in the fill tube, sometimes the vent for the tank is not working. But there are several components to the EVAP system.
I would check the filler tube first.

the breather tube for the tank might be clogged not letting the air out. so when you fill the tank the fill cant get in fast enough b/c the air is not excaping. check the breather tube for kinks or bends. or even blockage of somekind

Pump shuts off when pumping gas into my 99 durango.

there is a vent tube for the fuel tank that runs right next to the fill tube, it must be obstructed, that is the only thing that will cause this problem.

Gas shuts off every few seconds when filling gas tank

there is a vent tube that runs along side the fuel tank fill pipe, this tube allows air to went out as fuel is put in,if it kinks (it is very soft thin plastic tube) then u end up with your problem, replace the vent tube, the fill pipe and vent tube come as one part.
