Question about 1995 Nissan Pathfinder

1 Answer

T dies while I am driving down the road. If I hold my foot on the brake and gas with the car in neutral it starts and then I can go, but it will just die for no reason. My husband undid the air filter cover and it stopped doing if for a few days, then it starts all over again. We don't leave the cover off, we just unhook it and the rpms go up to normal, and we reattach the clips. But we don't drive it with the cover unhooked. We've taken it to two mechanics and they can't figure it out because it doesn't do it at the shop.

This could be several different things, first replace the air filter. There is a sensor in the big hose running into the plenium, some people call it a center head or an intake. Check to make sure that this sensor is connected. And, there is a canister (probably in the fender on the same side that the air filter box is on), check this canister and see if it is full of dust, dirt, or clogged up with debris. This is the first place that catches all the dirt going into the air filter. Also, the gasket under the plenium may be cracked or need replacing. I can't tell you exactly what is causing your problem, but I can give you a good starting reference point.

1998 expedition yesturday was low on fuel got gas drove with headlights on got 4 miles down road vehicle died thought was bad gas 3hrs later vehicle would run but abs light and brake light would flash

There is a problem in the electrics of the vehicle. First place to start is to check the alternator drive belt for condition and tension. Next place is the battery terminals and condition and tension . Third place is to have a load test done on the battery as it may have an internal short and drawing all the current from the alternator. In effect when you add power requirements ( park lights then brake lights then headlights) you are actually using more current than the alternator can supply to keep the engine system running.

When you press on the gas when the truck is running, does it rev up?

Did it die while driving down the road (foot on the accelerator) or when idle? - If so, try cranking it and get your RPMs up to 1500-2000 RPMs and put it in drive (with your other foot on the brake). See if it will continue running if you never take your foot off the gas.

Drive vehicle down the road for 20 minutes and come to a stoplight engine stops when you take foot off gas peddle and go to apply brake. To keep vehicle from dying you have to hold the gas peddle down

Have you changed the timing belt? or timing belt guides? How many miles? This does not necessarily have to do with fuel.... Could have to do with air intake or timing as well....

You never loosen the air filter cover,as you create vacuum leaks, and the MAF Sensor won't work correctly. That could cause the problem your having.

Should be a simple repair. Just take it to a repair shop and have it properly fixed, then you can enjoy the ride, without the brake and gas pedal thing and stalling.

Transmission will not engage

Sounds like your torque converter may not be unlocking which is like letting your foot out on the clutch on a manual trans and not releasing the brake. Can you move it to neutral ok? To test the theory, move it to neutral, start the vehicle, then without putting your foot on the brake shift to drive with a liitle gas. If you can get going this way, it is the torque converter.
