Question about 1995 Nissan Pathfinder
This could be several different things, first replace the air filter. There is a sensor in the big hose running into the plenium, some people call it a center head or an intake. Check to make sure that this sensor is connected. And, there is a canister (probably in the fender on the same side that the air filter box is on), check this canister and see if it is full of dust, dirt, or clogged up with debris. This is the first place that catches all the dirt going into the air filter. Also, the gasket under the plenium may be cracked or need replacing. I can't tell you exactly what is causing your problem, but I can give you a good starting reference point.
