Question about 2006 GMC Sierra 2500HD 2WD

1 Answer

Hello, 2006 GMC Sierra 2500HD with the Allison transmission. Just under 90,000 miles of mostly highway driving with only motorcycles (motocross) in the back. No heavy loads. Occasionally the transmission will hesitate to shift while accelerating. Problem is getting worse and now the "check engine" light is on. I'm stuck at work until Saturday morning (fire dept) and need to get my son to a race first thing Saturday morning. Any thoughts on cause and is it too risky to try and limp it to the races? Thank you!

Could be a problem vacuum hose for the shift accuator or simply dirty oil needing a transmission oil change

SOURCE: 4X4 inop on 2003 GMC Sierra 2500HD

I have found that when you are going to engauge 4x4 high, it is best to only be going about 3 miles an hour. Not faster, not stopped. It likes some movement to help it mesh. I've had perfect shifts since I started this. Hope it helps. Wade.

Take your positive cable off battery and wait a few minutes..This resets the computer and takes it out of limp mode.Theres been a lot of problems in the dash so if you can find an auto zone and have them scan it They'll do it for free. But as far as the lights my truck does the same thing. Just flick your fingers on the buttons and they should flash..The plug in the back of buttons was loose..

SOURCE: 2001 Chevy 2500HD Whining

these transmissions have three sets of planatery gears the whining you hear is simply the gears doing thier job. You have to remember the allison trans is basically the scaled down version of the heavy duty isuzu truck trans they are designed more for thier load capacity then for comfort

SOURCE: 01 duramax allison changed fluid and filters now in limp mode

Make sure you have the proper amount of tranny fluild in it and get that Valvoline fluid out of it. Allison transmissons have there own type of tranny fluid and you want to use it. You can buy the right stuff from a Allison dealer. Most Detroit Diesel dealers are also Allison dealers. Look them up in your phone book and they will tell you the quanity and sell you five gallon pails of the fluid. Just get the serial number off of the side of the transmisson before you call. Change the fliters again too. Believe me, this is important. My company has Yard horses with Allison transmissions and you don't want to screw with the small stuff. Service them right and they work as hard as you want.

Instrument cluster says " Service 4 Wheel Drive". No 4 wheel drive while this is on.

Two possibilites:
Have you been thru a car wash lately?

Also,
There is a sensor in the trans that senses what gear mode you're in...it either is working or it isn't....
are you still under warranty??

You may want to inspect the "pass-through" connector for water contamination, and/or related wiring for corrosion.

THERE HAVE BEEN ALOT OF PLOBLEMS WITH THE SHIFTER HANDLE/SWITCH. THE BEST WAY TO VERIFY CONCERN IS USE A DIAG. SCANNER & VIEW TRANSMISSION DATA DISPLAY WHILE ENGINE RUNNING. THE SWITCH IN THE SHIFTER IS FAULTY. IF YOU SEE NO INPUT CHANGE WHILE DEPRESSING SWITCH THIS IS YOUR CONCERN.
