Question about 2000 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

1998 Taurus (160,000 miles) when I come to a stop sometimes won't go when I give it gas. It will rev up but just sits there for about a minute and then it will lurch forward and be fine.

Sounds like the transmission may need some fluid.

Engine revs up by itself & then down so low it dies. 86 ford taurus v4 manual

Sound like an airflow issue. But not sure if that car has a mass air flow sensor. Clean intake with carb cleaner or seafoam. I use seafoam for these issues. on throttle body unplug largest hose that has suction when running pour very slowly 6 oz seafoam into funnel connected with hose then shut car off let sit 15-30 minutes then in an open area run the car for 10 minutes revving engine to clean out the carbon. Then drive high acceleration 55+ for 10-20 miles or until smoke clears from tail pipe.

Transmission

Either an adjustment problem, pump or even worn clutches.

Idles roughly, then low when stopped or in park, then dies. Decreasing gas mileage. Slow to accelerate

Sometimes that's caused by a vacuum leak near the manifold area.

Sometimes air in the coolant will cause an idle problem. Air will keep the air temp sensor from sending proper info.
Hope this helps.

Check the gearbox oil level on the gearbox dip stick if its too low it can cause problems .If the level is ok then check its colour,it should be red if not it will need to be drained and refilled with the correct oil.

Surging and dropping idle

It could be an o2 sensor. When you are unplugging your battery it causes it to rereset and loose its memory. If the o2 sensor is going out it can cause false readings leading the problems you stated. You can take it and get it scanned you can do what I did and go ahead and replace all my o2 sensors. I figured since one when out, the rest wouldn't be far behind.

My 1998 dodge caravan won't stay running. starts up but shuts down instantantly or when i take my foot off the gas pedal,

ok i have a 1998 durango with the 5.2L 318 engine. had trouble with a bad cell in my battery. I went out bought an optima red top battery for it 800cca. put it in and had same trouble. No start without putting foot on gas. wouldn't stay running without holding foot on gas. CPU has to relearn it's programming once you unplug it for long periods of time. mine was without power for about 2-3 weeks till i got new battery. Start with this.. first check under air filter make sure a squirrel hasn't made a mess under your air filter and it's clogging the air intake. Then pull off the lid to your injector cover ( the screw down lid coming from the air box ( with air filter in it) to "carb") make sure all your cables move freely. put that all back together and close hood. Start truck with foot slightly on gas pedal to get started. keep it at about 1k to 1500 rpm for about 1-2 minutes. Rev motor to about 2500rpm and let it die out if it will. Get out lock doors with key fob if you have it. if not make sure to lock doors. ( trust me it worked for me) let sit for 5 minutes. come back out and unlock door and relock door 3 times with fob ( if you have it ) or key if you don't have a fob. Then unlock it with the key and enter vehicle. Start truck as before and keep it around 1k to 1500 rpm again for about 30 seconds rev it up and should keep running. Mine did. I think the iac was stuck from sitting and has now since loosened up.
Good luck hope ti works for you.

Car looses power when driving, won't accelerate

Most likely the exhaust converter is worn out
& broken up inside & blocking exhaust flow

I will assume your gas filter hasn't been on the
car for ten years

You can not run O2 Sensors over 100,000 miles
or Spark Plugs over 3 years or 60,000 miles

The TPS Sensor could be worn out

If the Transaxle is 13 years old that surely could
be slipping & in need of a rebuild
The average Taurus trans goes 65,000 miles then
breaks down

2.7 synthetic Mobil1 ATF oil, you need an oil pump to pump the fluid from the bottom of the transmission.
