Question about 1985 Ford F 250
If you cannot open it, after trying a few days, then you might consider getting a sawzall and cutting the posts and once you have it opened replace the posts (from a junk yard).

you will need to try to remove the rear door panel on the tail gate or pry it away its not easy because of hidden screws the manually pull the linkage

SOURCE: tail gate
this is a partial solution. Remove the inside panel on the tail gate -- simply remove several screws and pop off the panel. yes, you might break some plastic clips. That exposes the locking mechanism and it's a simple matter to open the tail gate from the inside now. See the rod with the threaded fitting? Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how to adjust the rod that operates the lock, so I've just left the inside panel off for now ;-)

from inside if you can get to the panel and remove it to reach the mechanism to open the tailgate and try autozone.com to see if they have your car listed for diagrams pictures and step by step instructions if your car is not listed then try your local library they have all the car manuals and even copy them for you

SOURCE: tail gate stuck closed
Hi;The latch/ouside handle is held on by four bolts on the inside of tailgat. Remove the four bolts and the handle should come clear so you can see the mechanism. Your on you own now.
