A p1698 means the pcm (power train control module) is not recieving a bus message from the tcm (Transmission control module). The vehicle bus is one wire that runs to each module as there means of communication. This could be a broken wire, bad connection, or possibly a bad module. Unless your pretty sure about what your doing and have some good wiring diagrams you should probably take it to your dealer

All PO codes that are in the 1600's refer to the power control module. you may have a loose connection since the problem is not happening all the time as you put it

The vehicle has found a fault and reverted to LIMP HOME MODE to prevent further damage.
The P01698 code translates to the following....

The code references a communication BUS problem. Each NODE needs to be PINGED first to identify which one doesn't talk back. Once that has been established, then the twisted pair between nodes needs to be confirmed for continuity and no shorts to powers or grounds. Then the offending NODE would be replaced. On Chrysler products, you can access the NODES with your lab scope via the PDC box next to the battery and use the joint connectors for the NODE access. Here's how your shots will look from dominant to recessive when the NODE is active and working. If you don't see this pattern, that's the NODE that's bad.

Check the connectors to the input and output sensors, also the connector going into top of tranny by the input and output fluid lines.

also - take a look at the wiring harness connections under the battery tray. Acid drips on them and corrodes the whole harness and the others close by.

Good Luck!!

P1698-NO BUS MESSAGE FROM TCM

Looks like there's a problem with the transmission control module in the Dodge. It could be a wiring problem to the TCM, or the TCM itself, I'm not sure, though.

Maybe have a transmission shop look at it to diagnose further.

It's kind of like having a bad harness connection to a hard drive in a computer... no signal..at times.

Lots of possibilities from a bad solenoid pack to a broken gear or blown internal seal. No way you're gonna DIY your way out of this. Get it to a shop.

Is it better to go into D3 wihile car is moving or stopped?

Well every gear has its limitations. I am not sure what the mph ranges for each gear are, but i've gotten to 60+ mph in 3rd gear. The only thing about driving on the freeway in 3rd gear is that it is alot less efficient mileage wise. Your turning more RPMS while on the freeway in 3rd gear so you burn up alot more gas.
Driving in D3 is driving in 3rd gear. It could burn up the tranny but it depends on the vehicle itself. It is not really made to do highways speeds in 3rd gear. It should be in 4th or 5th (OD)
