Question about 1998 GMC Jimmy

Open Question

The dashboard indication lights on a 1998 GMC Jimmy flicker on and off irregularly and the gauges intermittently fail to work. I believe it to be a short in the wiring harness on the ignition switch because when manipulating the wires the dashboard occasionally goes back to normal. My problem is that I cannot remove the wiring harness on the ignition portion of the steering column. How should this be done?

Unfortuantely, there is not a plug in wiring harness for this vehicle. You will have to splice in a 4-Flat Plug. No converter box is needed since it's a standard 2-wire system. You can view this part if you click here.

White - Ground
Yellow - Left Turn
Green - Right Turn
Brown - Running Lights

Now, this is only to wire you to a 4-flat. If you need a bigger plug like a 6-way or 7-way, there are adapters. You can view these if you click here.

If you are going to install a brake controller also, you will need another wiring kit that includes a circuit breaker and wire. You can view this here.

Hope this helps!

Could the mass air flow sensor cause 98 Jimmy to not start? It only turns over and begins to start but boggs out.

Yes it could cause it not to start or could start and run very rough. Are you sure you are getting proper fuel pressure? Could be many things that would cause it not to start and run though. Is your service engine soon light on the dashboard lit up? it is where your gauges are.

Dash not working

the SIR fuse is located in the side dash compartment, drivers side. I believe it is # 14, i know that if it's blown or out the airbag light will stay on.
