I would, first, check the battery connections to make sure they are shiny and clean and tight on the battery.

Then, I would check the amperage draw of the starter in the car.
If it's like 75 to 100 while turning rapidly, that's ok. If it doesn't turnover rapidly with that amperage draw, then the starter is probably going bad.

When the car is jumped, it bypasses the battery connections a little bit, assuming the connections are not allowing full cranking amps of the battery to reach the starter.

This is an indicator of a dead / undercharged battery.
Voltage on a battery should be close to 13volts, But the cranking amps are most important during cold winter months.
Have the battery tested. Most Auto shops will test your battery Free.

post is good and clear, no engine size stated.>>>

this simple check proves battery is good /bad or just discharged.
yes, jumps and runs. (ever clean the battery lugs ever?
if it jumps the battery is bad/or disharged, so charge it.

bad starter. or funky key line.

My 2000 cadillac deville wont start. Battery and alternator good. Trunk or gas door will not open either until I start it. I jump start it and its fine all day until the next morning.

If you can jump start it, then it is most likely the battery. Unless you have had the battery Load Tested, a simple voltage check is not enough to ensure there are enough amps there to start the car, especially on cold mornings. Since you can warm start it and it seems to do well all day, my bet would be a weak or dead cell in the battery.

I have a 1978 MGB..wont turn over..clicking sound..is that the starter motor?

Make sure your cables to the starter and battery are tight and clean. A good jump will test if the battery is the problem. Starters can become intermittent before they go totally bad. Corrosion on cables and connectors can interfere with voltage delivery. Start system needs really good battery connections and just having lights is not a good enough indication. A strong click and no spin usually means the connectors in the solenoid are not engaging or the brushes in the armature are worn out. A whimpy click usually means a bad connection or low battery.

That would probably be your alternator. The car doesnt take as much power to keep running as the lights. The lights use alot of power and if the battery is doing the alternators job it drains quickly. The battery is only designed to start the car then the alternator should take over and recharge the battery. When the alternator fails the battery will soon fail. Even though you had to jump the battery it was still new so it had a big charge. That is why you were able to drive so far. On an old battery and a jump I've seen people drive a long ways until they turn on their lights. I say 99.99% sure it's your alternator. Here is how you can test it. Get your car jump started again or charge your battery and start your car. While it is running get out and unhook the positive battery cable from the battery. If your car dies, you have found your problem(the alternator). I hope that I could be of some help. Good luck.

I would say that you need to replace the alternator. The car was running on the batteries power. When you drove the car, it ran the battery completely dead.

Alternator issue more than likely. I believe the regulator is built in the alternator and the brushes are bad. Brush cnagnge should be considered first. It would only be an $8? fix I believe. It is easy to change brushes if you know what your doing or have a teacher.
