Replace the TFI ignition module (mounted on the outside of the distributor) and the distruibutor pickup ( inside the distributor) and the problem will go away, I would also replace the coil if it is orignal.

here are the parts you need.
UNITED IGNITION WIRE Part # M425
w/ Push-on Type Rotor-Mod. Mounts On Dist; Electronic Ignition
$22.00

Sounds like a timing chain or other ignition issue. Worn distributor etc.

Engine shuts off

nope, distributor plugs and wires, change those and the pcv valve. Run you total no more than $100 for parts if you shop around a bit, since parts prices vary greatly. the spark is not entering the cylinders correctly to burn the fuel properly, replace those items and you will not have this issue unless you have some rare deadly engine disease- :-) Hope it helps and have a nice day!

I'm having the same problem with my 90 2.3L Ranger. I replaced the EGR Valve back in August and the truck ran fine (but the gas mileage was bad) until late December . I knew it needed an O2 Sensor back in August but didn't replace it until last Saturday along with the Idle Air Control Valve, Plugs and Wires. The truck ran fine for a couple minutes then started running like a VW bug! My code reader is now throwing out an EGR failure code, so I guess i'll take the 4 month EGR back and get a new one, and see what that does!_549.jpg
