I am trying to replace the rear, side window, and I am wondering what special tools I will need? Do I take the old rivets out and re-rivet? Or can I use screws?

You need to re-rivet due to the minimum clearance. I was never able to find a compatable screw size. Rivet replacement is very easy and the rivet tool is available anywhere. Drill the old ones out and re-rivet. I have included instructions for assistance. I know you probably wont need them, but just in case.

The rear motor/regulator replacement parts are sold as an assembly. Do not attempt to separate the motor from the regulator before verify that separate replacement parts are available.

  1. Remove the door trim panel. For details, please refer to the procedure earlier in this section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the armrest bracket-to-door screws and the bracket.
  4. Remove the water deflector from the door.

The water deflector is secured by a strip of adhesive between the deflector and door, as well as waterproof sealing tape. Upon installation, make sure a good seal is achieved to keep water from entering into the body. If necessary, use strip caulking as a sealant between the deflector and door.
  1. Raise the window to the full up position. Using cloth backed tape, tape the glass to the door frame.
  2. Unplug the electrical wiring connector from the window regulator motor.
  3. Separate the regulator lift arm roller from the window sash.
  4. On 1994-96 models, the regulator can remain in the door, on 1997-99 models, remove the regulator before attempting to remove the motor.
  5. To remove the window regulator motor from the door:
    1. Drill a hole through the regulator sector gear and backplate, then install a bolt/nut to lock the sector gear in position.

CAUTION The sector gear MUST be locked into position. The regulator lift arm is under tension from the counterbalance spring and could cause personal injury if the sector gear is not locked before the motor is disconnected.
    1. Using a 3 / 16 in. (5mm) drill bit, drill out the motor-to-door rivets.
    2. Remove the motor from the door.

To install:
  1. Position the motor to the regulator, then secure using 3 / 16 in. (4.8mm) rivets.
  2. After the motor is riveted to the door, remove the nut/bolt from the sector gear.
  3. Install the regulator lift arm roller to the window mount sash.
  4. The balance of installation is the reverse of removal. It is usually wise to check operation of the system before installing the water deflector and trim panel.

How to remove power window motor

Some motors are pop riveted to the door panel. With the window up remove the the arm rest screws then remove the screws hidden by the arm rest. Next use a special tool to pop off the upholstered door panel unplug the wire harness for the windows, door locks and seat controls pull off the plastic vapor barrier. Now locate the motor and look for the mount screws. If you can't see them then look for the pop rivets that hold the motor on. Before you drill out the rivets make sure you have the correct replacement rivets and the tool to install them. Once you have all that then drill out the rivets carefully. unplug the wires to the motor and pull it out of the door.

Rear left window not working

You have a defective power window motor and regulator assembly. The regulator is pop riveted in so you must drive out the rivet center and then using a special rivet cutter bit cut the head off the rivets. You can use machine screws to put the new regulator in as long as they are short and don't interfere with the operation of the new regulator. I do not show the rear window regulator as being available in the aftermarket, you may have to buy it from Ford.

I have a 1986 Cadillac Fleetwood with two front window motors that have stopped working, and a rear passenger side window that will only go down. I am trying to replace the driver window now and have...

I had an 86 Deville

You have to drill out the rivets
-- to remove the window regulator & motor assy

If the motor is bad (test it-put battery
12v to it) then you drill out the smaller
rivets to remove the motor & keep the
window regulator if good.

If the regulator is bad, remove the good motor
& put it in the new regulator

The regulator can be bolted back in as you
will not have a big size pop rivet tool for that,

Before you remove the rivets, check the height of the
window glass above the door, when window is down
You can set it just above the molding per build or down
even by adjusting how you bolt the regulator in

The regulators wear out & cause a sloppy window movement
& the plastic on top can not be fixed

nor can you afford one.

04@yahoo.comI rolled the window down on my 94 Mercury Marquis and all I got was a crunch crunch crunch. What happened? Is ti hard to fix? Will I need any special tools?

_31.gif I had the same problem, remove inner door panel remove plastic, drill or cut rivets that hold winow regulator in place, I used a dremel to remove rivets, replace rivets with 1/4 nuts and bolts and lock washers, rear windows are a little easier than front.

Can't remove two rivets on the old window

If the motor is attached with rivets, then you will have to "pop" the rivets out and replace with small bolts and nuts. I had the same issue with my 96 Buick.

How do you remove the window regulator from 1992 ford taurus? He removed the bolts, but it appears there's rivets or something still holding the regulator/motor on. Do we need a special tool or something?

Yes, four rivets hold the regulator in place. You will need large rivet gun and some long reach rivets. The rivets are available from most parts stores (NAPA).
Punch the center of the rivet out and remove the head.

R & R power window drivers side Need to replace power window regulator on 96 Lincoln Town Car drivers side. Need instructions on how to do this.

I am in the process of doing this now to my 96 Lincoln Towncar. Today I removed the door panel. Hidden scews that attach the door panel are at end end of the door pull strap. The plastic end pieces are removable and each have a screw underneath securing the top of the door panel.
Hidden behind the water shield material at the top of the door are two nuts that retain the top connection of the window lift. I am going to razor cut a straight line through the water shield material to insert a socket to remove the two nuts and then put duck tape over the razor cuts rather that pull the water shield material from the door frame.
Started drilling on the left rivet to detach window from the regulator and quit for the evening.
Have three rivets to drill to detach the pwoer window motor from the door frame.
Two more rivets at the bottom of the door to drill out to detach the lower window regulator from the door frame.
Do not know how I am going to remove the right rivet of the bracket that hold the window yet. Looks like a would need a long drill bit to reach through the door frame to make contact with the rivet.
The replacement rivets that came with my window regulator are to big for my rivet tool. Could end up using nuts and bolts. Sure would make it easier for the next window regulator replacement.
Hope I have some good luck using the drill tomorrow. kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd

Removal of driver side front power window regulator

you have to replace your window regulator. to do this you have to remove the 7 rivets holding the regulator, the window motor and window. first, take a punch and pop the centers out of rivets. then drill them out. this will allow you to remove old parts. then reverse the process. you will need special rivets from Ford and a large rivet gun.
