Hi, the timing marks are stamped into the steel pulley and flywheel and there should be a pointer attached to the engine. Degreasing the engine with GUNK and power washing it should uncover them.

I'm pretty sure it's crucial to have the engine timed to TDC as it relates to the end of compression/beginning of power stroke, and NOT the end of exhaust stroke.

With gas engines I do the following, to determine the TDC, by removing the #1 plug and insert a long straw, while turning the motor by hand watch for the maximum height of the straw, this will give you a TDC but knowing if its on the exhaust or compression stroke can only be determined if you were watching the closure of the intake valve indicating the begining of the next power stroke. Once you have this set look for the timing marks again. if you can't find them pick up a service manual at the library or autoparts store for photos and instructions.

How to remove a clutch in a 96 vw jetta gl i dont know how

easy model to do but i have worked 13 hrs today then an hour on here and my back aches sat here ,if you remove the drive shafts then undo the bell housing bolts and gearchange then you can slide the gearbox back a bit so you have a gap of an inch and bit at the front and using a 9mm ring to undo the bolts one at a time its possible to drop the clutch ,then put the new one in and the bolts in loose you locate the clutch then tighten the clutch bolts through the timing mark hole as i remember rightly

I cannot get the timing marks on Crank and fly wheel alinged

to be honest it not as easy as it sounds to line them both up,,,,you may need to use a locking stud to do this,, and i have seen engines that just wont line up even to half a tooth out,,, but they run just fine anyhow, its all down to just how good the pullys were cut and marked

I need to take off the water pump on a automatic 1992 jetta...

If it's a 2.0L or 1.8l, you'll have to take off the timing belt. I'd suggest looking for a procedure on removing the timing belt and the water pump is under the distributor gear usually. Do NOT loose your marks, or else you can ruin the engine.
