Question about 1992 Chevrolet Caprice

1 Answer

Cruising at 70 mph in heavy traffic on a very hot day, engine just quit, started it in neutral, it quit again. coasted to the exit road to a stop light, this time the engine started and ran normally all the way home, about 10 mi. When I got back I started to remove the gas cap, seemed to be under a lot of pressure. I let it hiss for a couple minutes before removing it, I wanted to add some injector cleaner which I did. Has been running fine since, about 4 days. Anything I should do? Thanks, Carl

Hello,

Thanks for using FixYa.

Your car needs a major tune up. Valve clearance adjustment. Ultrasonic injector cleaning. Replace spark plugs if its not replaced for a year or so. replace oil filter, fuel filter.

This should fix your problem. Thanks and have a nice day.

Depending on the actual code for the O2 sensor, the fuel pressure may be low at times. You may want to look at fuel pressure and delivery.

Why does my Car overheat a little while in stop and go traffic but doesnt when cruising down the highway?

Check your coolant level, blow out the cooling fins on the radiator with air. Look for blockage in front of the rad. When in heavy traffic and stopped, put in neutral and rev up motor to 1200 to 1400 rpm's to allow coolant to circulate more.

Complete loss of power on a hot day in heavy trafic, after about one hour power is back

Did the engine overheat and go into limp home mode? That would be my guess.

How can i minimize the fuel consumption of my jeep 2000 cherouki laredo 6 cylinders ?

There are several things you can do. Make sure the engine is in good tune, replace the air filter, Air the tires up to 34 pounds air pressure to lessen the rolling resistance, How you drive is most important. Take off from traffic light and stop signs slowly. accelerate steady, don't be in a hurry to reach cruising speed, unless, of course, you are merging with fast traffic. Anticipate stops. Start slowing down sooner when coming to a stop sign or traffic signal. Coast on the downhill streets, and use the cruise control as much as possible. Don't waste gas warming up your vehicle in cold weather. It will warm up quickly while you are driving. Any time spent idling is zero miles per gallon.

have fuel pump pressure checked 50-60 Psi at idle 60PSI with vac line diconnected from pressure regulator. If that checks out check for ingation switch failier may be keeps car power on but telling ecm that it has been turned from run. Also have a wave form done on fuel pump as it can still have good pressure but not be fully funtional elctricly. if you have acsses to a tech 2 have it checked for codes as it may not have turned on the light but may have stored a code
