When I get out of my car, I smell gas. It is not in the back part, but in the middle. THere was a crack in the gas cap which was replaced, but the smell is still there.

My 94 SW had the same problem which would not go away though I replaced everything which touched gasoline. A diesel guy finally set me straight by replacing the MAP sensor. That was an S, not an L, but could be same issue.

Thank you. I had the fuel pump modulator replaced which was broken and that helped, but I still smell it but not as strong. I will pass this on the next person that looks at it.

Things to check for:
  1. a leaky fuel injector
  2. fuel tank leak
  3. a leak in the fuel line / rail
  4. faulty or cracked EVAP canister or vapor hoses
  5. missing gas cap or one that is loose

Gas smell

I had a similar problem with a 2000 Kia Sportage. The check engine light came on all the time. Part of the problem seemed to be the fuel cap having high pressure. Then one fine day I smelled gas fumes from the rear of the vehicle. After removing the fuel pump cover in the rear behind the seats, I found gas coming from a hose from the tank. I then (sometime later) I found a crack in another hose. The hose was from the filler neck. It caused a lack of vapor pressure and a smell. The check engine light now was off.

2002 ford taurus smell gas when the outside temperature is over 80 degrees

Fuel tanks have a vent tube and a charcoal cannister to capture the gas fumes from the tank. It's possible there is a cracked or loose hose, faulty fuel cap, bad canister or a fuel leak and any one of many connections. Investigate for sign of raw fuel along the underside of te vehicle, and in the engine compartment. Attempt to follow the smell to isolate the location of a leak.

Gas smell coming from exhaust

May have to remove the fuel injectors & mail away
to be ultra sonic cleaned & flow tested

I suspect you need a new exhaust converter & oxygen
sensors--- once the fuel issue is solved

Why is a repair shop not your go to place for answers?

Evap code..ch eng lite on...repl evap valve rear of car outside tank..code stays off for couple weeks to couple months then come back on not gas cap problem

which evap code is it?
p0455?
p0449?

in most cases it is the gas cap, if you have replaced that and it is not working still then i would suggest you look for a leak, do you smell gas when around the car? if you do then it is definitely a leak.

I would suggest for you to change out the gas cap if you are not smelling gas when around the car. sometimes aftermarket gas caps do come defective.

What does diagnostic code PO455

A code p0455 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
  • A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
  • A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
  • Other leak or damaged piece in EVAP system

With a p0455, the most common repair is to:
  • Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
  • Otherwise, replace the gas cap, and/or
  • Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses (you may hear a vacuum noise or smell fuel), repair if necessary.

1990 VW Cabriolet Gas Smell and humming from gas cap...The smell and sound happens more frequently on warm/hot days. Gas cap seal has been replaced, but still having problems.

The humming noise is coming from the fuel pump.  Its possible its getting ready to fail.  These start making noise when they are going bad.  The smell can be coming from bad gas cap not sealing up fuel tank properly and or a fuel pump/sending unit seal.  You can pull the back seat bottom out easy enough by removing 2 5mm alan screws that secure it to the floor.  Remove the seat bottom buy pulling out and remove black cover under seat bottom that has 3 philips screws.  you may smell fuel more promanently here.

Smell of gas fumes underneath vehicle near fuel tank

I also have a 2004 XC90 and a couple of months ago I had the exact same probelm... after multiple visits to my dealer's auto shop they figured out that it was the fuel pump. They replaced the fule pump and the smell disappeared. Good luck!
