Question about 1992 Ford Aerostar Extended

1 Answer

My 1992 aerostar 4.0 2wd has lots of problems. It runs cold all the time. When I let i warm up it back fires and has no aceloration. I floor it and after a few backfires it runs normal until I get into high gears then it coasts and I have to play with the gas pedal until it catches again. My electical items are not working one by one. 1st the power mirror went down, then windows. I use a driect line to power the windows and it worked for about a month now nothing. Could the altenator be the problem. I had it tested and they said it was bad. I don't what to spend 150.00 if it won't fix the problems. Thanks Larry

If your battery has enough power to start the engine then your alternator will not have anything to do with the rough running.
Theres a remote possibility the engine running too cold could cause the bad running. Replace the thermostat. You'll find it under the cover that the lower radiator hose connects to.
A far more probable cause is the MAF sensor. Its about $80.

Starts when cold

Sounds like a bad ignition system, if its firing poorly through your distributor once it warms up its not firing hot enough.

1992 toyota 22re fluids out and puts out a lot of fume out the exhast

Floods out.Multiple causes. How does it run when warmed up?Still stink?
Check injectors: Run the engine up to 3,000 RPM and turn off the key, while flooring the gas pedal. If engine still runs, the injector(s) are stuck open.
Also check for a vacuum leak-that will cause the engine to run very rich.
Also may be an open circuit in the temp sensor(computer side). The engine may think it's very cold and richen up the mixture.

Try changing the pickup coil in the distributor? This one had a lot of mechanics baffled, the guy at Auto Zone nailed it on the head. Cheap fix if that is it. Always overlooked

Might check the coolant sensor. Make sure it is reading correctly. If it is still reading cold on your coolant sensor it will tell the computer to run as if it were cold telling the computer to send more fuel when in fact it doesnt need any because the engine is already warmed up.

92 aerostar hard start

Hi, without testing the car, and knowing miealge on car, ill guess coil is faulty or you can go to any large parts store the new franchise type. They will come out and put a tester on usually free and just might save you a lot of money, before a mechanic tells you to rebuild the motor for 3,000. Good luck to you! Frankie!
