My 1996 camry shimmies at high speeds and low speeds as well when i apply the brakes whats the problem?

Most common problem is warped discs/rotors.change them as a pair with new pads....could also be....worn hub bearings,rubber bushing,track rod ends,car needs to be put on a ramp and inspected for these faults.

Brake shimmy is due to hot spots on the rotor or drum the metal is actually hardened in the spots causing friction differences when the brakes are applied causing front end to shimmy . If you have your rotors turned the hot spots are still present so I have always justr replaced rotors pads all at once shimmy gone .

This is usually a bad bearing. The tire is tilting to one side and causing uneven wear. The shimmy is because of the slack in the bearing and the contact the front rotor is having with the brake pad. Every time the low side comes around the rotor will hit the brake pad and grab it.

You will need bearings and brake work.

When braking from high speed front end shimmy's and steering wheel vibrates


Hi,
from your description I would list these possibles.
One or both front brake disc's / rotors are warped.
One or both front brake disc's are badly scored

If the fault, as you described it only happens when braking from a "high" speed, I would check the above.

Front end shimmy under "normal" driving can be caused by numerous faults in addition to those I stated above. However, I am using your definition as a scenario.

If your tires were not properly balanced then it will cause that. Also, if your rotors are warped then icould cause this to happen. YOu would also notice it when braking if rotors are warped.

Steering wheel shimmys at speeds 35 and up just changed rotors and pads no play in new wheel bearings doesnt shimmy when i brake though. any help would help greatly thanks


If it shimmies with the brakes applied, it's a rotor problem....but like you say, it shimmies just at a certain speed with no brakes applied, check tires for out-of-roundness. If they look ok, you are looking at a balance problem with the tires.

if you are getting a shimmy in the wheel this is a good indication that your front brake rotors are warped and upon replacement the lug nuts should be torqued to 100 ft lbs or they might warp again,also the rear brakes should be checked for correct operation to make sure all the stopping force is not left for the front brakes to handle all by themselves,hope this helps

yes this is a brake not grabing well or tire slipping and the low traction taking over , but if you are having the shaking in the wheel then that is why you see the trac light , and it may also be the trac system acting up or even the disc are bad and need replaced( warp , rust , uneven wear on disc

Sounds like warped rotors and worn pads or a worn front end or both. Most shops will check this for free I believe. If it were something like wheel bearings, or rear end you would likely notice this at lower speeds as well with out the brakes being applied. So the direct answer to your question is "Maybe, maybe not". Gee, that was helpful was'nt it?

I have a shimmy in mySteering wheel not all the time it comes on randomly.


In absence of more information, this is usually an symptom of warped brake rotors. A rotor can build up enough heat in a hard stop to be bendable especially with the high hydrolic pressure a brake pad can bring to bear. Simply, If you keep the brake pedal depressed hard after a hard/long stop it can warp the rotor. (NOTE: at a hard stop, as soon as possible let the car creep forward a few inches at a time so the brake pad won't be on any one spot too long, plus keep light brake pressure --only enough to keep the car from rolling). The warped rotor causes the brake pad and caliper to float too far from the rotor and you won't feel the shimmy until you apply brakes. Under brake pedal pressure each time the wheel rotates under brake pressure the rotor and caliper will rapidly vibrate a few millimeters to each side giving the sensation of a shimmy in the sterring wheel. Most of the time this can be corrected by having the rotors resurfaced( aka Turned)

Out of balance or out of round tires can also cause a shimmy but should occur at a given speed range. Warpped rotor shimmy occurs during deceleration.
