When should I change transmission fluid

Transmission fluid is red. Pull the dip stick, it is light brown, change it. If it dark brown to black, Just keep it full. If it is acting up, probably to late for a fluid change.

How can I tell if my 2000 Volvo S70 needs transmission fluid or a new transmission?

Smell the fluid, if it smells burnt and looks black, have a filter change and a transmission fluid flush, it is two different services at a local garage. What is you're transmission doing? Feel free to e-mail me direct at car_crazy_1203@hotmail.com

My daughter just got a 2000 volvo s40. It has a 115,000 miles and the timing belt has never been changed. And, the transmission fluid is brown. Should we be concerned?

Yes, and no. The timing belt MUST BE CHANGED. It should have been changed at around 60,000miles Bad, bad things can happen if it breaks while its running. As for the tranny fluid, it has probably never been changed either so it's probably 11 years old. Just have that changed as well. Otherwise, very nice car. Good luck with it.

I have a volvo s70 yr 2000 engine light giving a transmission code so it wont pass emissions here in georgia car runs fine was driving it everday volvo stated I need a new trans any suggestions to get it...

We need to walk through a few things. What is the state of your transmission fluid. In good condition the fluid should a vibrant pink and be clear. The smell should be a pleasant almost fragrant light oil. If your fluid is brown and/opaque then this indicative of wear. The smell is an unpleasant over-cooked burnt aroma. The brown colour is from the band clutches slipping and the friction wears the lining down and overheats the material - brown and burnt basically. If the fluid is opaque filter some of it through a kitchen paper towel. If there is grey sludge this is likely to be aluminium alloy. Pass a magnet over the sludge paste, if particles cling to the magnet these are flakes of steel. If you remove the bottom tray to the gear box the frst thing you see is the underside of the metal filter. If you remove this you can see the sort of material trapped in it. If it is just over cooked fluid then a filter and fluid change would be good place to start. If there is particulate sludge this is an indication of imminent failure. You do not mention the code specifically. If it is a selector solenoid then this can be replaced without the huge expense of a new transmission. In the old days a mechanic would know what the the fault was and try to repair the part. Subsequently this has given way to just replacing the part, then to a strategy of replacing parts until it works, to finally a situation of lets replace the whole assembly!

Two repair shop opinions on changing transmission fluid.

When the colour of the fluid changes it's an indicator of old fluid which must be changed. Too many garages rely on diagnostic codes these days instead of using their brains. The same rule applies to power steering fluid as well.
In any case, a fluid change costs peanuts in comparison to the potential problems which can occur when using fluid which is life-expired. If in doubt, change it.

Where is the drain plug located on a Volvo 2000

There no tranny drain plug, you must drop the pan to change the fluid and filter. Standard fluid is fne. I believe Dextron3 but double check with the autoparts store (tell them you have a volvo) and they can lookup the correct type of ATF.

2000 S80 Tranny wont shift to overdrive, and after stopping at a stop sign it wont shift to first, stays in 2 or 3, Turn key off and start the car, tranny shifts starts out in first, still no overdrive....

Greetings Idpeters:
Please check your transmission fluid level. After the engine is warm pull the transmission stick and make sure the level is close to the full line and that the transmission fluid is red and not brown. You may have to change your transmission fluid and screen. If you plan to do it yourself I can advise you on how to change it step by step or you can take it to a transmission shop or dealership for a transmission tune-up. Good Luck

Transmission fluid change

It differs with use but for a rule of thumb you can look at the fluid on the dipstick against a white cloth and if it brown to black looking not a reddish color you should have it serviced.Either a drain and fill or a complete trans flush if it is black.Your trans will thank you
