Question about 1993 Geo Tracker

The spark plug popped out of the head while i was driving and now the head is stripped, i do believe the heads are aluminum.

Clean the engine well and look for source of leak, one place is oil pressure sending unit. try Marvel Mystery Oil in fuel tank to help free sticking fuel gauge sending unit. Stuck spark plug is bad if in aluminum head. Spray PB Blaster around plug several times after engine is warm and let sit. I have had cross threaded and corroded plugs take out the threads in the head have had to insert helicoil to repair it. Try removing the plugs when the engine is hot, aluminum expands when hot.

Of course, if they won't come out cold warm the engine a little but not too much. When you install them use a little Champion spark plug lube or sensor safe anti seize compound OR take it to someone who has the required expertise. If they are already seized from previous improper installation you will have trouble.

If the plugs are indeed seized, attempting to remove them can strip out the threads in the head(s). Obviously if you need to replace the plugs they will need to come out. If the threads strip out, you will need to remove the affected head and have helicoil or keensert inserts put in to repair the threads. As a side note, always use antiseize compound on the spark plug threads when replacing the plugs on vehicles equipped with aluminum heads.

Yes, I've heard of stripped plug holes, almost always they can be repaired with special inserts or something called a helicoil. It sounds like he damaged the head when he tried to repair it and now nobody wants to try again. I would look around again for another head or even a complete engine. These engines were very common, any scrap yard should be able to find either or and I don't believe his story that all the heads he's found are bad. I'm a mechanic and I hate to poop on another guy but he sounds shady. New heads are really expensive. What is the engine size?

YOU REMOVE THE CYLINDER HEAD COVER.YOU REMOVE SPARK PLUGS FROM TOP OF THE ENGINE CYLINDER HEAD.FIRST YOU REMOVE THE IGNITION COILS AND HIGH TENSION LEADS THEN REMOVE SPARK PLUGS.YOU NEED SPARK PLUGS SOCKET THE LONGER SOCKET WILL BE GOOD YOU NEED LONGER EXTENSION, YOU NEED SPARK PLUGS GAP GAUGE AND A 3/8 RATCHET WRENCH. YOU NEED A TORQUE WRENCH ITS NOT MANDATORT BUT JUST DONT OVER TIGHTEN SPARK PLUGS OR YOU WILL DAMAGE THE ALUMINUM HEAD THREADS.

Spark plug blew out of motor


The spark plug blew out because it was not installed correctly and was loose. Install a new plug and do it very carefully as there may be carbon in the treads the plug screws into. Screw it in until you feel it getting tight and then turn it back. Keep turning in and out until it fully seats. Always follow the vehicle manufacturer torque recommendations, but as a general rule 14 mm plugs with a gasket style seat should be tightened to 26 to 30 ft.lbs. in cast iron heads, but only 18 to 22 ft.lbs. in aluminum heads. Likewise, 18 mm plugs with gasket style seats should be tightened to 32 to 38 ft.lbs. in cast iron heads but only 28 to 34 ft.lbs. in aluminum heads. For taper seat spark plugs, 14 mm plugs should be tightened to 7 to 15 ft.lbs. in both cast iron and aluminum, while 18 mm taper seat plugs should be tightened to 15 to 20 ft.lbs. in both types of heads.

either your not tightening the plug properly or the hole for the plug is stripped out. if the hole is stripped out you will need a new head

1997 ford expedition spark plug blow, its all strip. its an aluim head. is there a quick fix or do i have to replace the whole freaking heads?


The Spark Plug hole can be repaired. The professional way is to remove the cylinder head, and use a repair such as a Helicoil.

The spark plug hole is tapped out to a larger thread size, with a special Helicoil tap. Loctite or some other form of thread locker is applied, and the Helicoil is inserted.

Helicoil's are made of Stainless Steel, and are much better than the original material used in the cylinder head. (Be it cast iron or aluminum)
Drag racers use Helicoil's in their engines.

Tapping out the spark plug hole for a Helicoil, or using a special thread chaser, is NOT a good idea, while the cylinder head is still installed on the engine.
The tap creates chips of metal which fall down into the cylinder.
Using a vacuum to try to alleviate the chips, falls short of a good repair job.
