Question about 2007 Jeep Compass Limited

1 Answer

I keep getting conflicting answers. We're getting ready to buy a 2007 or 2008 Jeep Compass. Can both the 2WD and 4WD be towed behind an RV, with 4 wheels on the ground?

  • You can tow any front wheel drive manual transmission vehicle as far as you want and as long as you want. As an added precaution, you might want to consider a lube pump or axle lock to ensure that no transmission damage will occur.
  • Most 4WD vehicles with a manual transmission, manual transfer case and manual lock out hubs can be towed on all four wheels safely with no problems.
  • If your 4WD has no manual lockout hubs and/or no manual transfer case, then you will need a coupling device on the rear drive shaft to tow it safely
  • Before moving the towed vehicle, check the following: transmission fluid level is full, release the parking brake, start the engine, shift the transmission from Park to Drive, shift from Drive to Neutral, turn off the engine, leave the key in the Accessory (I) position, make sure the radio and all accessories are turned off.

The steering system can be damaged if the steering wheel is locked. Always leave the key in the Accessory (I) Position to prevent damage to the steering system when towing behind another vehicle.

Some recommend starting the engine and shifting the automatic transmission (if so equipped) through the gears approximately every 500 miles and shifting from Drive to Neutral before shutting off the engine.

Safe towing of a vehicle with four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome can only be done with a supplemental braking system including a break-away feature.

SEVERE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DAMAGE WILL OCCUR IF THE CAR IS SHIFTED FROM REVERSE TO NEUTRAL AND THEN TOWED WITH THE DRIVE WHEELS ON THE GROUND.

You can avoid certain kinds of handling problems by making sure that your vehicle is towed with the tow bar as close to horizontal (parallel to the ground) as possible. This prevents your vehicle from "riding up" or "running under" the back of your coach during hard stops. It also avoids excessive stress on both the hitch receiver and your vehicle's mounting brackets.

Most newer vehicles will not add miles to the odometer while they are being towed. Such vehicles have an electronic odometer which will work only if the key is in the "on" position. If your vehicle is an older model and does not have an electronic odometer, you will need to have a Speedometer Disconnect to keep miles from adding up on your towed vehicle.

Never ever back up with a vehicle attached to your coach with a tow bar. Backing up is the most common way of damaging your tow bar or towed vehicle.

lost the operators guide
there are 8 ways to tow. (even backwards tow, and dont it 1000 miles myself)
you never said even 1.
the ways in the oper guide car clear buy it and read?
you never once said the magic word, 2wd or 4w.
but in generic forum answer would be.
1: do not burn up the rear transfer case bearing 4wd.
2: do not burn up the rear 5speed bearing 2wd.

easy no?
and how to not do that.
lits say you said foward flat to, no dolly.
1: drop rear drive shift (tricky ask) and drive to the moon, and back.
2: RTM read the guide and it tells you this.
3: buy the, bearing lube kit with pump, for trans.
4: buy the $1500 drive shaft decoupler lever device, $$$$$$$ask

btw ive repaired the damage your about to cause... (hint)
the bearing is no lubricated, towed engine off.
facts.

Can i tow a suzuki vitara xl7 behind an rv?

Your truck can be flat towed. By placing your transfer case in neutral you completely sever the link between the engine/ transmission and the driveshafts to the axles. The transmission could be left in gear (manual) or in the case of an automatic, park and it wouldn't make a difference. Please be advised to place the transfer case into 2wd or 4wd BEFORE unhooking towed vehicle as the vehicle will start to roll if on an incline. I would apply the emergency brake as well but I wouldn't use it as a first thing to do just in case it's out of adjustment and won't hold vehicle in transfer case neutral.

As far as things still moving would be the following, rear axle and driveshaft and front axle and half shafts. Before towing if towing for long distances maybe have the trucks bearings, U joints and seals checked.

Be safe!

How do you disassemble a steering lock on a 2005 Jeep Wrangler I have had a problem with it locking up even with the key on the off pos... I'M RV towing it.(etc)

ok redux:
your towing the veh. not driving it.
big difference there....
if the steering locks (if first unlocked)
with key in OFF or in run )
the key switch is bad and car too dangerous to drive. It must not lock, imagine a car fire.
and you cant cut electrical to off. imagine.

NOw FAT TOW, (one end up tows, are *******)
so of all the ways tow a veh, which one.???
flat tow.?? (just did that 1000 miles on XJ)
dolly tow.?

each has different rules.

the key lock is to prevent theft towing , with no key.(in possession)
that is its purpose.
What drive line,????
2wd or 4wd
what transmission , a/t or stick?
i cant guess your driveline nor tow mode and both matter.

http://rv-roadtrips.thefuntimesguide.com/2007/05/tow_jeep_wrangler_unlimited.php

but one example.. above. hope i guessed your driveline.
some are even 2wd. !
lots of drivelines,,, engine /trans, and 2wd/.4wd
and rules for not burning up rear bearings in all transmissions. (on a/t box the pump is dead. so..)

i do see a mistakes in the book.
step one page 232. (in glove box book)
it should say, insert key and get the steering unlocked first.
if stuck?, get front tires off the curb, or out a pit in road. or off a huge rock, to release the parking steering lock.
lock #1 is in the A/T box, and is a problem child #2.
same with a/t box. the park can lock up same way
the lock sticks.
if car parked say down hill, and driver used park lock, before the hand brake,...
ask folks in San Francisco about that.?
I took my military driving test there... fun !

i think i posted all ways to mess this up.

Can i tow 87 chereokee automatic 4x4 behind rv?

You will destroy your transmission trying to tow a 4x4 with any wheel rolling on the ground. You could however have the rear drive shaft removed for towing and have the front wheels up on a tow dolly. That would be safe.

Having activation problems. How exactly do you activate the 4 wheel drive on a 99 Jeep Cherokee?

Just pull the control lever one notch rearward. first position is 2wd, next is "part time 4wd". after that is neutral (only used when your vehicle is being towed) and last is 4 low, only used when pulling heavy loads at low speeds on slippery surfaces. Best to engage 4wd while rolling at under 30mph. If dash light remains on after shifting back to 2wd, usually backing up about twenty feet or so will disengage it.
If doing what I said does not get you into 4wd, then you need to have someone qualified look at it to make sure the transfer case, front differential and both front axles are in good condition.

Just bought my son a 93 jeep grand cherokee cant get it to run in 2wd we have 4wd all time & 4wd low on the shift.when we put in nutral & put the auto in drive the wheels dont spin dont have a...

Neutral is only used when you need to tow the jeep. Normal two wheel driving is done in 2h. To engage 4wheel drive keep rolling slowly and engage either 4h or 4L. Generally 4L is almost never used as it is for pulling weight like a vehicle stuck in a snowbank. If it does not return to 2h when you go back into two wheel operation, many times it will if you back up about ten or twenty feet. Don't engage 4 wheel drive while standing still. and never force the lever if you hear grinding.

With any 4WD like this, always move a few feet in the opposite direction when disengaging. If you were moving fwd in 4wd, switch to 2wd, back up a few feet, then go fwd.
