My car will go into drive and reverse but will not move

I was told by a mechanic that it is more than likely an electrical problem as it does actually go into gear and shifts just fine while driving. he said it actually does go into drive, reverse, etc., but there is some miscommuication with the vehicle and my tires will not turn. Something to do with power to differential or something.....is this a possibility? I really don't want to dump a bunch of money into a car this old so any cheap ideas are welcome

Massive failure in the gearbox. Nothing more you can do to it, the gearbox must be dismantled to identify the cause of the failure and what needs to be done to fix it. This is a job for a transmission specialist, tow your car to one.

it will go right away sometimes and once I get it to go, it will move through reverse, drive, neutrel no problem. Once I put it back into park it will act up again.

In that case, yes, it's most likely an electrical problem. Get underneath the car and check the wiring loom. After that check all connections to the ECM from under the bonnet. If you can't find and fix the broken wire/connection then you must take the car to a shop if only to have the codes checked - this will be necessary for a better diagnosis.

My mechanic friend hooked it up to a portable diagnostics machine and it did read a code...not sure what code but he said it was something to do with ignition and that may not be allowing power to my transmission. He cleared the code and started the car again and went through all the gears.....and the machine never read a code again, which he thought was weird. I'm just hoping it is something not too expensive

  • Azrael SRL Aug 04, 2010

He was right to feel that as weird, the only way the ECM would do that is because it receives bad data from the gearbox .

Sorry but to fix that the ECM must be replaced and the car tested again - if the same code pops up then the gearbox must be taken out and dismantled for further testing. And it will be expensive.

New symptom....no power at all to entire vehicle....I went to start it today and nothing. No click, just silence when I turn the key. My power locks and stereo are dead too. The battery is good, checked that first. Could this also be part of my "electrical" problem?

Of course, the ignition key switch has just totally failed and must be replaced. Since key switches don't just die it means that it was seriously overstressed by a short, most likely in the ECM. Time to tow your car to a shop, this is a big problem, a lot of parts are going to be tested and replaced - it will be expensive, over $500.

Did you know you might just be low on transmission fluid

Thanks for the reply, but that is the 1st thing I checked and it would not cause total power loss to the vehicle

When I put my gear into Reverse, Netrual and Drive the gear is getting stiff to move. Why is this happening?

If you mean the shifter is getting hard to move, its probably the shift linkage sticking, try a couple squirts of pblaster or other penetrating oil. If the motion of the vehicle is getting hard to drive in reverse and drive the torque converter may be the issue.

If I understand you correctly, you have ALL forward gears working, but reverse doesn't?... then the problem is in the transmission itself or the linkage on the trans linkage into reverse.

I shift from park to reverse No problem with Reverse, But i cant drive

Will it move forward in manual low? Try unplugging the plug above the vacuum modulator to lock it in 3rd and see if it moves. Either way the transmission will need rebuilt but at least one of these might get you moving.

Have you checked your transmission fluid level?

When i put my car in reverse it won't move but will drive forward perfect and is full of transmission fluid

Assuming this is an automatic transmission, odds are you have lost a band in your transmission, this will require a rebuild,  you may also notice it will fail to shift into high gear as well?
