Question about Ford F-450

Open Question

I have a 2006 E450 bus which won't start. Parts mechanic tested as defective starter, but after changing still won't engage. Any help, I have no book as to what fuse or relay belongs to what instrument. Thanking you in advance for any help, Jim Byrd

sounds like starter solenoid,try cycling the ignition on start on start repeatly but do not go back to the off position off on start will activate the fuel pump repeatly and might flood it,with a faulty solenoid you can usually cycle the ignition repeatly and it will finally engage the starter

Yes they do but I would rather think you have a bad battery cabe connection to the system, sometimes the battery cable corrudes and you can't see it try replacing the cable ends and the connector ends espically if they are by the battery.

If you look under the hood, there is a starter relay that might be the problem - but more common than that, - Do you have an alarm system of anykind? If so, It sounds alot like that is the problem, and they are notorious for causing "no start" problems as such - Unfortunatey, the wiring for these (even to just remove one) can be rather involved (as they often cut the starter wire to install an interrupt) so you may have to take it to an auto electric shop, or one that specializes in alarm systems - Also, dealers sometimes install special "electronic lot key systems" in all of their new cars, requiring that the "electronic key" must be present in the vehicle (along with the correct physical key) in order for it to start - I'd check for one of those systems as well - Hope that helps...

My 2003 dodge caravan would not start after driving about 1/2 hour. I stopped for coffee and when got back in to start it started I switched gears and it stalled. I tried to start again switched gears then it started but only for 2 sec. No clicking, no cranking sound just would not start but battery functions were great. Spent 2 days with a mechanic who could not resolve so sent to Dodge. After a day of putting wires back and checking out the problem they said it was the computer. Said that it was bad and could be replaced at no charge due to malfunction. Yes, it worked fine afterwards no more problems. They also said that some of the computers are found to be defective like this one so I hope this helps you in the right choice to have the dealer check it out if you are unable to get a computer reading and there is no obvious short in the system. Free sounded very good but as you know there is no such thing as really free as they got me for other things $350 worth. ouch!

Intermittent start, NO crank. Gets warm-hot won't restart, wait 10 min -hrs. Then starts right up.


sounds like a bad starter or bad wire from the starter. When it gets hot it fails. Look at all wire to and from the starter, and have the selinoid on starter checked.I think that's where the problem lies. Let me know how you make out Starters can cause this

I turn key and starter spin but will not engage flywheel.


You have one of two problems: Either the starter drive on your starter is defective and is not engaging the flywheel to crank the engine, or the flywheel has some broken or damaged teeth that are preventing the starter from engaging.
Starters come in a variety of designs. On some, the solenoid is mounted on top of the starter. When you turn the key, the solenoid routes current to the starter motor and at the same time pulls a lever that slides the drive gear mechanism out so it will engage the flywheel and crank the engine. If the solenoid is weak or damaged, it may not be strong enough to overcome the spring tension that retracts the drive gear. So the starter spins but doesn't crank the engine.
On other starters, the solenoid is mounted remotely. When the starter motor starts to spin, it ratchets out so the drive gear will engage the flywheel and crank the engine. If the drive mechanism is damaged or hung up, the motor may spin but not crank the engine.
Regardless of what type of starter you have, it will have to come out for further inspection. The drive gear (which is sometimes referred to as a "Bendix drive") should move out when the starter starts to spin. The drive gear usually has a one-way clutch that is supposed to protect the starter against damage if someone keeps cranking the engine once it starts. The gear should turn one way but not the other. If the gear is locked up or turns freely either way, the drive is bad and needs to be replaced. If the drive can't be replaced separately, you'll have to replace the entire starter.
Starter Testing If the drive seems okay, the starter should be "bench tested" using jumper cables or special equipment designed for this purpose.
CAUTION: Be careful because a starter develops a lot of torque. It should be held down with a strap or clamped in a vice (be careful not to crush or deform the housing!) before voltage is applied.
A simple no-load bench test can be performed with a battery and a pair of jumper cables to see if a starter motor will spin. But this test alone won't tell you if the starter is good or bad because a weak starter that lacks sufficient power to crank an engine at the proper speed (usually a minimum of 250 to 500 rpm) may still spin up to several thousand rpm when voltage is applied with no load.
A better method of determining a starter's condition is to have it tested on equipment that measures the starter's "amp draw." A good starter should normally draw a current of 60 to 150 amps, depending on the size or power rating of the starter. Some "high torque" GM starters may draw up to 250 amps, so refer to the OEM specifications to make sure the amp draw is within the acceptable range.
If the starter does not spin freely, or draws an unusually high or low number of amps, it is defective and replacement is required.
An unusually high current draw and low free turning speed typically indicate a shorted armature, grounded armature or field coils, or excessive friction within the starter itself (dirty, worn or binding bearings or bushings, a bent armature shaft or contact between the armature and field coils). The magnets in permanent magnet starters can sometimes break or separate from the housing and drag against the armature.
A starter that does not turn and draws a high current may have a ground in the terminal or field coils, or a frozen armature.
Failure to spin and zero current draw indicates an open field circuit, open armature coils, defective brushes or a defective solenoid.
Low free turning speed combined with a low current draw indicates high internal resistance (bad connections, bad brushes, open field coils or armature windings).

I have a 2006 sebring- the starter won't engage when the engine is hot- no blown fuses or relay issues.


Does the starter maybe just click? Are all the connections to the starter and the battery clean and tight and free of any corrosion, check all these things first. If the starter does click you got a poor quality rebuilt and the starter solenoid is defective. DON'T USE SO CALLED DISCOUNT AUTO PART STORES REBUILT UNITS, THEY ARE JUNK.

when you state it wouldn't crank, do you mean the starter won't engage or that it just spins over and doesn't start? if no gauges or no starter engagement, then check the battery, battery connections,and the starter for excessive amperage draw. if the starter spins and the engine won't start, then check crankshaft position sensor first. the crank sensor is a more common failure than the distributor or any of the other things you mentioned.

2000 expedition wont start changed sloenoid and battery still just click wont turn over


The poster should first make sure new battery is fully charged.Be sure battery cables are very clean and tight,same with connectors on solenoid. Have an assistant turn on headlamps(high beam) and attempt to start vehicle.Do lights remain the same or do they dim excessively? If lights dim noticeably check for shorted starter cable or defective starter.also check engine for excessive turning effort using turning tool on engine crank bolt or screwdriver in flywheel with starter removed.If lights do not dim check for open circuit in starter or cable.Sometimes a few sharp raps on the starter body will get it to work temporarily.Defective starters will often have a burnt smell. IF engine is excessively hard to turn,mechanical problem,such as leaking coolant into cylinders or defective injector may exist.Always use extreme caution when working under vehicle or near electrical components,batteries can explode or burn you badly and starter can engage causing serious bodily harm.Most auto parts stores can test starter with component removed.Also be sure correct replacement part is installed.This vehicle has several solenoids that will fit,but will not necessarily work.

first thought is that the starter is defective and needs replaced, a cehap test is to find a friend to beat on the starter with a hammer while you attempt to start to vehichle
