SOURCE: PROBLEM WHEN SELECTING THE DIRECTION FOR THE AIR

Sounds like you have a supply vacuum problem. When you lose supply vacuum to the control head it defaults to defrost.

SOURCE: 1985 Olds Cutlass Air Blowing out Defroster vent

Anybody can just change parts until the problem goes away. Answer this first: Was the underhood of the car recently serviced? and did this problem appear at that time? Perhaps there is a vacuum line broken or disconnected. The Heat/AC idepends on vacuum to actuate the servos that direct air passage. I know that the control cluster is known to fall apart, but check vacuum lines first.

Good luck!

SOURCE: AC blows through defrost and floor vents instead of ac vents

You have a vacuum leak in the system that controls the vent doors. First check for cracks at the vacuum reservoir, then check the various vacuum hoses and vacuum motors for a leak.

SOURCE: 98 Olds LLC - AC works but fan air does not blow

If you have a late model GM car and the system is controlled electronically the blend door actuator becomes weak. When this situation occurs it will not move the air direction door inside of the heater/air conditioner plenum. in your case not to the vents Replace the actuator with new and recheck the system. i hope this helps

Air blowing out floor and defrost vents but not not front vents

Sounds like a blend door problem. The vacuum from the engine opens and closes the door that directs air flow thru the vents.
I would guess the door is stuck in the middle of the range or something is blocking it.
The blend door(s) is behind the glove box.

1999 chevy tahoe, my ac blows colder in the rear passenger vents then it does in the front passenger vents. what could cause this problem and how can i fix it? how do i access the front ac vents?

it could be your vent doors not opening and closing properly or completely. There are vacuum actuated doors that direct air from the heater - or A/C Evaporator(even mixes the two on some) , as well as defrost, vent, floor and so on...

Might want to check for vacuum leaks(broken, hanging, cracked vacuum lines), or see if anything is obstructing the vent doors.

Check your vacuum lines; you probably have a vacuum leak that is preventing the flaps from closing and opening upon "command."

Heat problem

Low heat is most commonly caused by a low coolant level in the radiator. I have a 1995 Cutlass supreme that only blows out the floor and defroster vents. I had fixed it once before, but it is acting up again. There is a controler box behind the glove box that controls which vents open up. Two things could possibly be wrong in the area. One....the electrical connector could be loose or dirty. Two....The vacuum hose running to the clear plastic vacuum manifold near the controller box has been cracked or broken or burned through and is not providing vacuum to the vent doors. I know this sounds complicated, but if you remove the glove box door and box liner, the controller box and clear rubber vacuum manifold will be evident. The eletrical connector has 4-6 small gauge wires in it and a white terminal end. The vacuum manifold has one black vacuum hose and several colored hose running from it.
